these are legitimate questions which can be answered, but no matter what's "right" to achieve peace, the current Israeli government doesn't have it in them to do the right thing, for them, its always about creating a threat, however small, into an existentialist one.
If I was Israel and wanted Hamas marginalized or sidelined, first thing I would do is cut off its money supply. Hamas makes tons of money from the smuggling of everyday products into Gaza. Israel should open one of the crossings to inject as much consumer product into the Gaza economy that would kill the tunnel trade and would move the Gaza economy in the right direction, getting most people back to work.
no one is calling for a split between the West Bank and Gaza, especially as the State of Palestine. As you and everyone else can see, the West Bank is maintained very well in Areas A and B where the PNA Forces are deployed. Look at the success of Ramallah, Nablus and Jenin...these can be models for Hebron and Rafah, but there neeRAB to be access for the Palestinian police and the rest of the Security Apparatus to work freely.
It is in Israel's interest to engage elements in Hamas which want to move away from violence, instead of pushing those who see violence as their only means to continue violence.
This is all very much a mental game for the Israeli and Palestinian public...make everyone feel there is movement toward peace and you will achieve it.
