Gay marriage is NO BIG DEAL. why should it even be debated in the first place?

the government has no business basing laws on religious beliefs. Talk about equal protection of the law.

There is no 3000 year tradition of marriage in the United States. Tradition is a bad defense for continuing to do something wrong. Early biblical followers sacrificed animals. Maybe we should do that, there is a longer tradition.

To really make sense of it all we have to look at what marriage in the US really is. Since the US does not have an official religion all legal marriages are civil marriages. A civil marriage grants the parties certain rights and responsibilities. All marriages granted by states are "civil unions". Why is it appropriate to discriminate against some people by cheapening their relationship because you do not agree with their lifestyle? Remember, these arguments against same-sex marriages were also used to prevent blacks from marrying. Let’s not get in to the next people will be marring dogs or sisters bs.

Religious marriage is appropriately regulated by the church. They can either accept or reject same-sex marriage all they want.

Many will also state that same sex marriages should not be allowed because the marriage cannot produce children. Should the state then prevent infertile couples from marrying? You can't have it both ways, you either need to limit marriage to those couples that are going to reproduce or allow any two consenting adults to marry.

We are not talking about granting any one “special rights”. Allowing same-sex marriage does not take anything away from anyone. The fact that some believe that it offends the majority does not change that it is the right thing to do. At one time letting blacks get married offended the majority. Luckily we learned to be better human beings and got past the hate.

and gay marriage won't hurt me. gay marriage won't hurt you. gay marriage won't hurt anybody else. if you don't like gay marriage for ANY reason (which includes religious and personal reasons), then DON'T have a gay marriage. associate with straight people, continue to encourage straights marriages. if it is against your religion, then live YOUR "traditional" wholesome life the way YOU want to. but mind your OWN business and let others do what they want to do in THEIR own personal lives. their business if none of yours. if THEY get married, it's none of your business. if THEY "go to hell" because of their homosexuality, then let THEM suffer the consequences. don't associate with gays if you don't like it. YOU live YOUR wholesome life and have YOU "go to heaven". mind your own business. live and let live.
okay. JUST BECAUSE GAY MARRIAGE WOULD BE MADE LEGAL WOULD NOT MEAN THAT EVERY COUPLE WOULD BE HOMOSEXUAL. STRAIGHT COUPLES WOULD STILL REMAIN THE SUPERMAJORITY. HETEROSEXUALITY WOULD STILL REMAIN THE NORM. NOTHING WILL CHANGE.
no actually, massacussets has legalized gay marriage for IDK-how-long-now, and it doesn't seem like a pain in the butt for them. life seems to be going on as normal for them as it did before gay marriage was legalized.
I will also say that the United States is NOT entirely a democracy. like it or not, we are NOT a country run by public majority and mob rule. if that were the case, then george w. bush would not have been elected president in 2000. YOU don't make the laws. your precious old congress(wo)men and senators do (and occasionally the supreme court, who were also NOT appointed by the public).

Because we live in a democratic republic (for now) and the majority gets to decide if it's a big deal or not.

Besides, everyone know gay marriage is a pain in the butt!

The fight over if gays should be married or not is an argument based on the name 'marriage'. Marriage, by definition, is a man and a woman. People are fighting because of disputes of what to call it, which is silly.
