I filled up my gas tank on Sunday, and I filled it up until the gas pump stopped putting gas into my car (meaning it was full), but when i got into my car the gas gauge showed that i had a little bit less than 3/4 of gas in my car?

then today (wednesday) the gauge showed that i had about a quarter of gas in my tank, and over those 4 days i probably drove enough to not even make the needle go down to half (it was probably 10 degrees out all day, would that effect it?)

so is my gas gauge messed up?
or was it the gas pump that wasnt working?

well it is possible the pump clicked before it was full. fill it again and see. the float may be defective if it is showing 3/4 when full 1/4 when half ect. The gauge is probably fine if it is reading and not bouncing all over.

unplug the harness to guage and ground the +. with key turned to on, the guage should peg to max. If it does, it could be the float or in the pickup not working properly. If it doesn't peg out, it is most likely the guage.

General motors are notorious for having the "guessing gas gauges". a sending unit in your gas tank, has a float ( like the thing inside your toilet) it goes up and down and relays the height of fuel, in terms of (ohms) to the gauge. when u have a (dead zone) the gauge will fluctuate until the sending unit is in a working position.
