...away? And can't they fix the ones we have now to be more efficient? Or a better fuel that gives more milage? This is bullcrap and the earth needs more garbage don't you all think? Why is it we have to buy better cars we should demand something to fix the ones we have to give us 40 th 60 miles per gallon people need to open their eyes and mouths right now!

You are correct in saying that the world doesn't need more garbage. While most of the vehicle would be recycled, concider the COST OF ENERGY to do so. So is it truly more efficient to dump the old one and buy a new one or just fix the old one?

Great point

Hope someone out there in techno land can or has idea to do just that....wow that would get jobs rolling, empty buildings filled
and save the landfills

Used to be able to change from gas to propane but propane sky rocketed too.

They must know how to do this as the car manufactures sat on the hybrids for years....

Got my hopes up for this great idea.....I just can not afford a new car and drive 450 miles per day....

They are melted down and made into new and more efficient cars...

"Despite their complex construction, cars are one of today's most recycled commodities. Whole automobiles are simply not landfilled. The reason why is that the steel and iron components, which make up nearly 65 percent of the average vehicle, are too valuable. Instead, virtually all of the steel and iron are recovered for reuse and recycling along with most of the other metals, such as aluminum, copper and lead. As a result, the recycling rate averages about 100 percent each year. "

- that's what happens to the cars that are thrown away.

There are already alternatives and conversions available. People aren't flocking to them. Guess why? Why haven't you upgraded yet?

The second it becomes cost efficient to retrofit 100's of millions of cars, you will see it happen. But spending 3000+ to put a 1.3l economy motor in your 3 - 4000 pound vehicle that is already 3 - 8 years old isn't worth it. And how cheap would it be to power your vehicle from vegetable oil (etc) if suddenly everyone switched to that?

To expect GM or Toyota to recall their vehicles to upgrade them for free is wishful thinking. But even if they DID, they would still pass the costs on to the consumer... nothing is free.

You gotta be kidding me. Why wouldnt we want to be more efficient. So you're saying lets just pollute for the sake of polluting.

Seahag, that makes a lot more sense to me--cars can be made to be much more fuel efficient and wouldn't cost that much. Instead of handing out money to Big Oil, the auto industry, and agibusinesses to experiment with projects that are meant to fail, we should be getting out money back to make these changes! But they want to keep that from ever happening because it takes our money out of their hands--and makes us less dependent on them!
