garmin nuvi - how do you know if maps are successfully loaded?

So far I've found the software is utterly useless - perhaps the CD version was better? So far I've loaded:

Webupdater
Mapinstall
Mapsource

None of them or the device confirm that the year XXXX map has been loaded successfully?

Can anyone help!

PS I tried ringing them, after 10minutes I got bored!
