Garfield -- Is It Returning?

I used to talk to Mark Evanier alot back in the rec.arts.animation days. He and I were emailing each other about the supposedly new Garfield series he was doing and that it hadn't gotten off the ground. I kinda lost touch with him.

I was wondering if any insiders on here know what's happened to the project. I'm guessing it's dead considering it's hard to move on in finding another voice like Lorenzo Music.

And why? there's no where to put it. The networks don't want it, the Cable networks don't want it. Syndication is dead. It's not educational, so it can't be on PBS. There's nothing to do with a show. A DTV movie is the best they could do.

They actually do have a new Garfield voice. It's close, not as good, but it's very close. I just hope they can get Thom Huge and Greg Berg back to do John and Odie.

Nice to have known if there was a Garfield cartoon, Mark would have worked on it.

Frank Welker will be Garfield?

Well, he did have some roles in the original. I'm sure he's capable of capturing that Garfield aura.

Gregg Berger returning to play Odie is a nice little treat, but it's only whimpering noises, unfortunately. Nice to see Jennifer Darling still working.

CRAP! I just realised I got Greg Berg confused with Gregg Berger again. I thought I got past this.

Greg Berg= Baby Fozzie, Baby Scooter and the alternate voice of Donatello.

Gregg Berger with 3 G's = Odie, Agent K, and Orson.

That's why he has to have 3 G's in his first name. To stop the obvious confusion.

(Actually, I feel a little ashames a seasoned animation professional like me made that little goof.)

Yes, Gregg Berger is back as Odie. That's pretty cool.

Edit.

Wow, it looks like Jason marsden is voicing Nermal? Must be going through cat puberty or something, cuz last time I checked, Nermal was a woman's voice dispite being a boy.

And Frank Welker has done the voice of Garfield once. Very breifly. if you see the episode "Garfield goes Hawaiian," a Parrot voiced by Fank Welker does a dead on Garfield impersonation.

Dessire Goyette originally voiced Nermal. I guess she's too busy with her music company to do Nermal's voice.

I actually tried to email her through her website some time ago, but still have received no response.

And, I have no clue what became of Thom Huge.

I think the DTV and the new show are two different projects. The new cartoon just got announced that they were going to start on it a few months ago so we probably won't see it for a while.

No offense, but there has been no confirmation one way or the other that the project has been abandoned. I don't know about you (and no offense), but I prefer to "look at the glass half full". Yes, there is a DTV movie coming out, but that does not necessarily mean that this was done "in place" of the planned TV series.

Look, either it (the new TV series) will happen or it won't, but IMHO we shouldn't assume it won't happen just because there has been no news since the initial announcement.

Of course, optimistically speaking, the DTV could be a testing the waters pilot for a series. If the DVD is a success, it could actually make it. Either way, at least we're getting something that isn't live action with CGI pasted in.

Without Lorenzo Music doing the voice of Garfield, I just don't know if it would be the same. I grew up on Muppet Babies and Garfield. Saturday mornings growing up are some of my fondest memories. Smurfs, Muppet babies, and Garfield every Saturday morning. Then came Soul Train, letting you know it was time to go outside and play. :D
