Gardening question...?

My boyfriends mom lives in LA for work but she is coming back home for the weekend and so we wanted to fix up the house and the front yard. There are a lot of weeds in the planter boxes so I wanted to plant some flowers there.
Do I have to buy soil? Or can I just dig a hole in the dirt there and plant them? If I do buy soil do I just mix it in with whats there or just put it on top of the existing dirt?

Thanks =]

Take the weeds out of the boxes first of course and go out and buy some good soil. As you've said, take some of the soil you bought with the soil you already have and mix it up nicely, be sure to grind up any chunks of dirt in there so that the soil is quite fine.

If you're buying already grown flowers, remember before planting to take them out of their containers and loosen the dirt up around the roots. Maybe try a tickling motion at the bottom of the plant or gently massage the dirt around the roots so that some of it fall off. This will allow the roots to be a little more free and take root in the boxes easier.

That's all you really need to know, I hope your flowers flourish.
