That's always the problem with me too when actors don't get the accents right. It's really off-putting. Being Scottish, I notice it right off when an actor is 'trying' to do a Scottish accent. It's enough to put me right off the film if they do it in a panloaf way.
I also see what Alrightmate means about the environment. I think this was one of the reasons I was put off the film the first time round. I.e. the lack of 'realness' in the surroundings. Daniel Day Lewis's part in this is almost identical to 'The Crucible' and yet I loved that film. But it seemed very over-dramatised in 'GONY' and far too much like a play, whereas his part seemed appropriate for 'The Crucible'.
I actually enjoyed Di Caprio's performance in this when you dubbed out the overly played Irish accent.
All in all, I still enjoyed it better second time around, but do agree with others about it's lack of reality as you would get in an epic movie.
I love Sean Connery....regardless of which role he's cast in, he's Scottish....I particularly love his Scottish/Spanish 'Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez' character in Highlander.....
I've only seen this movie once and that was soon after it was released. From what I can remember, I felt that that the inclusion of the love scene(s) between Di Caprio and Diaz was totally superfluous and looked as if it had been tacked on (retrieved from the cutting room floor) at the last minute. I also felt that it was gratuitously violent.
I didn't hate it - it was just an average movie that I will not actively seek out in the future.
I think it was a case of too much material and not using it in the right way.....i.e. an audience way, and how we would have liked the facts displayed.
Shame....because it had its brilliant moments that were dimmed by environment and over-eagerness of its stars....who didn't study hard enough, the language....in fact, it was a big negative amongst others.
But all in all....I still enjoyed my one night on my own without distraction, a great adventure. A fantasy that took me back in time, and the dangers around that period.
All in all....it was a great night that I spent in my own company
