Ganglion Cyst Battle...

I have a very large ganglion cyst growing out of my right hand wrist's socket on top. This is the second one I've 'grown'. The first one, was removed surgically. A little over a year later, it came back. I did what I always do...ignored it, babied it, tried to calm it down. It only continued to grow though. Now it's much larger than my last one (3/4" high x a little over 1" wide sticking out when I angle my wrist downwards). I'm NOT going through another month of terrible pain, swelling through casts, and total arm immobilization again/doctor's aspiration, and I'd rather just try and take care of it myself this time.

I've tried the "bible method" with a shoe, and two different hard cover books, hitting it very hard. I've also tried squeezing it from the sides with pliers. I know that sounds quite harsh, but I've lost most of the feeling around the cystic area thanks to my surgery. It aches quite bad though sometimes around the joint. I'm a competitive powerlifter and I'm using my wrists at least 5 days a week in the gym, so this thing has to go. I've lived with it for too long!

Please share some at-home methods to get rid of this bugger! I won't give it a home any more!!

Tape it. Wrap athletic tape firmly around your wrist and over the cyst. It should start going down in a couple of days. If that doesn't do, surgical removal is probably the only option at this point. If it happens again, tape as soon as you notice it.

lqcorsa: I had one of those a long time ago. It was caused from typing/data entry and repetitive motion. Now I can't remember how the heck I got rid of it. I think I was seeing a chiropractor at the time and he helped me. I recall him talking about the book/bilble crushing methods to get rid of it and burst it.

It's possible that he adjusted my hand and massaged the tendon and put some heat on it to make it go away. The only other thing I'd say to do is go to your doctor and have them drain it with a needle. If I can remember exactly what he did I'll get back to you. It's been a long time and my mind is fried these days.

It needs to be wrapped all the time, not just for workouts. What happens is that it compresses the cyst and binds the top to the bottom, thereby causing the fluid to go away. I've done it for one on my foot and one on my wrist. However, I did it immediately upon having symptoms. You may have to have it drained again and then try the wrap if it comes back.
