These arn't as high on my pedestal, but they did pop into my head:

Bonk's Revenge- Snowy Mountain (starts at 5:37)

Super Mario Galaxy- The Center of the Universe

Kid Icarus- Underworld Theme

Good stuff... I think playing video games when I was younger preped me for being a music-freak.

edit: I forgot this little gem

Damn Kid Icarus had an amazing theme. Too bad the game is about the hardest game ever made. It took me 3 weeks to get to level 2.

Kid Icarus is an awesome game but indeed quite hard. Thank god for passworRAB.

Good call on Bonk's Revenge, that's a great game from a pretty underrated series. I definitely recommend getting a TurboGrafx16 emulator and checking that game out among others.

Mario Galaxy had a superb soundtrack as did Brawl and Twilight princess. I still think Nintendo are top of the tier in soundtracks. Most of the PS3/360 games I've played don't really make soundtracks an important part of the gaming experience and a lot of it is just background music that you wouldn't really want to listen to on it's own.

Picking a favorite soundtrack is tough but I'm especially fond of the Sega Genesis soundtracks. Some of my favorites.

Everyone knows this one.

Very jazzy techno stuff. This might be my favorite soundtrack ever.

Same guy who did the Streets of Rage music, a little jazz and funk mixed with techno and a very oriental vibe to it as well.

F*cking epic.

This was back when Sonic Team games had fantastic music and not nu metal banRAB and Akon.

Castlevania has a rep for awesome soundtracks overall.

It just adRAB more awesomeness to an already awesome game.

You just said it was.

I'm more of a genre nazi when it comes to video games than with music and I think the Mario RPG series falls comfortably under the action RPG category, with a special emphasis on platforming elements even if the games aren't technically platformers.

But yeah platforming > turn based battles for me.

Paper Mario 3 is a platformer
Because of this it is not a Paper Mario game
that is what I said
platforming elements are fine but shoving it down the throat of a once great franchise is wrong

yeah well fu‎ck your shi‎t you casual

Fu‎ck yeah video game music.

So shi‎t, I love Fire Erablem games, first one in English is one of my favorite games ever, and it has a killer soundtrack.

When you're playing the game the music fits perfectly. It's brilliant. So are the rest.

Now here's a game with a great soundtrack. Lots of classic shi‎t here.

And that'll do it for the Under Appreciated Games With Awesome Soundtracks part of the post, now onto more well-known stuff.

You may notice that my latest last.fm scrobbles are the Diddy Kong Racing soundtrack.

Gives me the creeps even now. That game still terrifies me sometimes.

In the sports department, NHL 99 had a great soundtrack. Perfect industrial-sounding stuff for a game where the commentary consisted of gems like "NORTH-BOUND ON A SOUTH-BOUND FREEWAY, LOOK OUT!" and "WELCOME TO THE ROAD KILL CAF

not quite the same as game created music but i love that they put all these sam spence nfl films songs in madden i turn all the other stuff off

The Wii one didn't have a bad soundtrack.

P.S that was one long post, and I just got past the Mario Party part, but geez... I'll have to finish it later.

P.P.S I never got this far in the game (this is the final boss battle music), but I know this song via the internet.

Never said that. In fact, the soundtrack and writing were just as good as the first two...but they just turned it into another goddamn platformer by tossing out the battle system.
