G1 Without Data Plan?

Anyone here using the G1 without the 3G data plan? I heard of some people being able to use the T-Zones proxy hack with it. I know that it won't allow you to use the market and maps and such, but are you at least able to send/receive emails, surf the browser, and activate the phone with the proxy? I don't mind the lower speeds of EDGE. Especially when I'd be paying $5.99 compared to $35 a month.

They usually want you get the data package with the phone and they will give you a hard time about it. From my understanding you do require a data package to setup your phone after which you dont need one at all. If your lucky and are around wifi all day long then you wouldnt have a problem at all and would be able to use your phone normally with apps that require internet connectivity without the data plan.
 
what if you bought a G1 without a contract? Not everyone signed the same deal, dude.

Has anyone inserted someone elses SIM card to see if it works?
 
Well, I called a rep once and she said the data plan can be canceled after the first month, much like when purchasing BlackBerry phones.

My buddy bought his phone off of the internet so he wouldn't have to pay for the data plan, which I am paying for. I poped my sim card into his phone activated it and he is good to go. He can yuse everything on wifi.
 
Hell, if I can use the Market and maps and all on WiFi than that's all I need. I just wish I could use email on-the-go as well. I am sure that you can somehow.
 
Check out this link. Follow the steps posted in the thread and it works flawlessly. I bought a G1 phone via eBay and now my fiance is using it without the data plan. =)
 
Well, I am sure it works but I could not justify paying $400+ for the G1. It's not even that good of a phone. To me, buying it without the cotnract discount is not an option.
 
Hey, for some reason this message keeps popping up no matter what I do "This is either a temporary problem or ur sim doesn't have data plan on it.. plz contact customer care"
it won't even go to the home screen anymore. I got it from my friend and it worked before but then it wouldn't add contacts for some reason so i reset it a second time (first time i did it to clear all my friend's previous data out) and now it keeps asking me to set up the android phone.. i've created 2 gmail accounts (one online and one from the phone).. can anyone help?
