G1 wi-fi problems

Hi everyone,

My G1 connects to my home network successfully, but all the apps that uses the network connection, doesn't work. I have tried with other routers. The router I have (Sitecom WL-160) works with the other computers I have at home (at works with my N95). The phone is granted an IP address (which is valid and is not duplicated), also accessing the router from the browser I can see the device and it's mac address. It isn't also an encryption problem, because I have changed to all kinds of encryption the router accepts (none, WEP, WPA/WPA2 TKIP/AES) and it never worked.

I have goggled a lot, but I didn't find any answers.I think I've told all I know. If anyone has any idea of what can be happenind ot how can I debug it please tell me. I'm starting to desperate.

You might want to see if you restart you're router and see if that fixes your problem. Also check if there are any firmware updates for your router.

I have the same problem, (most of the time.) Sometimes, I connect and my applications (web, etc.) connect fine. Since I haven't changed anything in the meantime, I can't figure out what causes this.

I am having the very same problem. Sometimes when i conncet to my wifi, the phone works just fine. then other times it will say connected and excellent connection, but none of my apps or browser recognize the connection.. wtf

man i have the same problem. start my wifi connection and in 3 min i have no internet connection and i have to restart my wifi connection. i use belkin mimo wireless g router. any answers?

Hi, Googler here trying out my new phone

I had the same issue connecting my G1 to my Linksys WRT110 so I poked around a bit and stumbled upon this solution:

Like the post above, tinkering around with the wireless mode fixed the problem for me. However, I had to specifically configure the router for "G only" and wifi is working like a champ with the G1. (I *still* only have one bar showing on the phone's wifi meter, but it works fine and the status says "excellent.")

Other routers already were working fine with it, (and of course my iPhone works like a champ on any wireless connection I throw at it....), but this one was a mystery until now. I hope this helps someone else!

Ben

You're exactly right, BigBen. Linksys routers with Broadcom chipsets in "N" or mixed mode + G1 does not mix. My BB Curve 8320 was the same way. UDA would not work in anything but BG mode.

I have a linksys wrt54g with the "tomato" firmware installed and I'm having the same issues as everybody else. It would connect fine, but every 15 to 20 min or so, i would lose internet access even though the phone is still connected to the router.

I use "togglewifi" to turn wifi off and then back on and it would fix the problem. Its annoying and I hope google fixes the problem soon.

Hey i was having the same problems, figured it out while readin these posts for the answer. its your firewall settings, the programs on the phone dont have access, but the phone itself does, which is why my browser worked but not the programs. i shut off the firewall to test it, everything worked great, so play with that, ps i have a wireless N router, belkin

Thanks for the advice.

I have the Linksys WRT160N wireless router and my G1 also wasn't recognizing my wireless signal. I switched the mode to "G only" and now everything is working just fine!

The G1 works fine with my Asus DD-WRT flashed router and the Netgear router at work. I'm having some problems connecting it to my GF's Belkin router. All other devices work fine (iPhone, laptops, desktop).
The phones get IP, router sees it and its MAC address but wireless connection is useless. Set it to G only doesn't help.

i have a dlink di-424 router, and for ages i had a similar problem, wifi would connect, but after 2 or 3 pages it would stop working, even though i was still connected.

I solved the problem by changing the settings from mixed mode to 'g' mode (under advanced->performance)

The router does both 802.11 b and g, in mixed mode it works with either type of hardware , in g mode it obviously only works with 802.11g hardware, but now my g1 works perfectly and i don't have to ebay it after all.

Hope this is of some help to someone

I had same problem of G1 not able to connect to wifi, but my WRT54G seems to be assigning an IP to it. I've searched all the posts on google and tried all the combinations of different WPA vs WPA2, TKIP vs. AES, G only mode vs. mixed, 8 bit key vs. 12 bit, etc. But none of them had the right fix.

Finally I checked Linksys's web site and updated my Firmware to the latest version and then viola, everything worked and G1 is able to connect. So it was as simple as that. So before trying all those combinations, upgrade your router's firmware first!

Right now I have it at WPA2-AES with 12 bit key on mixed mode. I'm sure the other combinations will work fine also.

Thanks for all the help.

I have had this problem since Feb 2k9 and I have tried different suggestions posted on this thread, but it still does not work, sometimes if i take out the battery and the Sim and put it back in, and then turn it back on, i will suddenly get a signal and so when i try to connect the Wifi the G1 reboots itself.

I have a Used unlocked G1 and live in the Dominican republic, so i cannot return this G1 to Tmobile.

I have updated to RC33 thinking it will probably fixed the issue, but still no luck. So i think it might be hardware related, So Please does anyone know if i buy any of this products below which one handles the Wifi?

HTC T-Mobile G1 Android Google Main Internal Antenna with Short Coax Cable
from here http://www.cellulardr.com/50H00442-05M-A.htm

Or is it this one

HTC T-Mobile G1 Android Google Main Transceiver / Mother Board with Sim Card Module

Thank you

You don't need those, just download Wifi Lock from the marketplace, and your wifi should be working again. If Wifi Lock doesn't help, try Wifi Helper, if that doesn't work either, upgrade to Android 1.5, it will fix the wifi issues.

If your phone is rooted, download android 1.5 from here:

Then update your G1 radio using the file:

Then update your recovery console using this file:

enjoy

Thanks for the advice and links, but since i live in the DR i do not have a data plan so i cannot download software from marketplace. Is there any way that i can download it to my PC than to the SD?

also is there a 1.5 update for unrooted G1 yet? i did have it rooted before, but i upgraded to RC30 than RC33 so that i can see if it will fix the WIFI problembut, i cannot remember but if i rooted again will i have to activate it again? Thanks for your help.
