G1 Weird

Ok so i gave my bro my old G1. I did a factory reset where it was asking me to activate phone over gmail. I popped in my brothers SIM card that doesn't have the G1 data plan nor any data plan only some family minutes plan. I entered my email, etc... it worked!(That's the weird part) I thought I couldn't do it cause no plan was on his sim. then i remember when i had the G1 without a data plan, internet browsing over Edge/3G wouldn't work at all, they would send me to the page that says my supported plan doesn't work. Now i'm browsing the web without data plan or wifi. I stopped cause i might get charged, etc...

I also changed the phone on the tmobile page from a RAZR to a G1 and vice versa. for both phones web browsing is still working.

I'm running 1.6 right now. Should I be worried if my brother accidentally uses the web and he gets charged a bunch?

did tmobile change something? Back in like '08 or '09 when I had the G1 without a data plan it wouldn't work at all.

It depends on your plan.

Some plans won't allow data at all, or it's an option to turn on or off.

Some plans will charge you based on the amount of data you use. This is usually extortionately high like $1 per KB, so checking your email will cost you $30.

Some plans charge you a set amount for every day you use data. My last plan was like this (UK). I got charged ?1 a day if I used data at all in that day, up to a maximum of ?7 a month.

While an Android phone can be used without a data plan, you really want to turn data off completely using an app like APNDroid, and just relying on WiFi for data, otherwise you'll end up with obscene charges.

But, I should say that it really nerfs a user's experience of Android if they don't have a data plan - there's a lot of stuff you won't be able to do away from home - Navigation, Google Maps, Email, IM, Browsing, etc, and while you're at home you wouldn't use them, or use a phone for them, anyway.

Well, without meaning to be patronise, the easiest way is to go to the Market app on the phone, type "apndroid" into the search, it'll find the app, press on the entry that says "APNDroid" - there will only be one, and click the big Install button.

Alternatively, if you have the Barcode scanner app, you can simply scan the QRCode on the page I linked, and your phone will automatically find the app on the Market for you.
