I really prefer not to have to pay a lot monthly because I don't use voice minutes. I only do IM, email, and internet browsing. So, I know with t-mobile you have the option of flex pay. I successfully ran my first gen iPhone on that service for about 2 years, without paying for monthly plans. I kept $$ in the flex account, and t-mobile (while suspending voice and messaging except for per-use charge out of the flex account) would allow the data connection to work for the t-zone web feature. My thought is I could pull this off with a G1, by having them activate an unlocked device with the web package. Key being get the sim card active, then drop it in the G1.
Right now, I have the 3GS on a regular ATT shareplan. My original plan was to port the line to a Droid. Now, I'm tempted back towards t-mobile just so I can save a little money and ultimately be happier with the functions I use constantly. I would be taking a hit to web browsing speed but a huge increase to GTalk and GMail reliability thanks to android. these functions are truly a chore on the iPhone, sadly. This is basically what sold me on the idea of getting off the iPhone train to begin with. It would sweeten the deal immensely to pull it off with a bit of cash back in my pocket every month at the same time (justifying the ATT etf in a shorter turnaround).
I have spent some time with the droid and never felt the keyboard was a total failure contrary to many of the reviews I have seen, I found it usable and incredibly nice to have as an option, though I'd spend equal time with the device in portrait using a single thumb on the virtual qwerty. Mostly, I am thinking I will enjoy android a lot more with a G1 with the freedom of the most modding options strictly because it's been around for a year and is established in the community. Wonder if HTC will be creating a sequel to it for android 2.0 that we'd see on both VZW and t-mobile
