G1 sends out international SMS without my knowledge

I'm using an imported G1 in Australia with Virgin Mobile. I just received my first bill, and it lists 200 international SMS sent within the 7 days I use the G1. I didn't send these messages and I don't know where they went.

Did anyone ever hear of a G1 sending messages in the background? Does it "phone home" or something? Or does my phone have a virus that sneaked through the many security holes?

It's the MyFaves-application that's sending messages. The only way to get rid of it is to change to the modified TC5-RC8 update. It's a modified version of the UK firmware.

AlfSimen, thank you so much. I'm flashing my G1 to the modified RC8 now.

I didn't do enough reading on this new device, so now I have to pay $70 for international SMS that the phone sent without my knowledge... lesson learned!

To everyone who's planning to use a US G1 on any other network than T-Mobile: BE AWARE OF THIS!!

hello all,
I am experiencing the same problem with my G1, running on the RC33 platform on 1.1 firmware. I just got slapped with a phone bill with almost a hundred international sms, my phone apparently sent, while i was roaming, but my G1 machine has no record of sending them, except for on my phone bill.
anyone still experiencing this problem? i've been using the phone for about 4 months now and it just started happening last month.

I have same. Bought usa tmobile g1 unlocked on ebay australia. So far nearly $200 for 450 or so texts to usa. Only shows up on bill. No details of dates or numbers phoned on bill. Virgin operator told me details not avail after bill issued. I escalated w virgin but may have to wait days. Don't know if messages still goig out.

yep...I 've got the same issue in Lithuania, I 've bought a G1 on american Ebay... it sent about 2000 intnl sms!!! thankfully I convinced my operator that it was a virus, and I was "forgiven" ) I found another way out of the situation, because I'm a little scared of installing cyanogen mod and all that stuff. you can simply enter some bull**** instead of your sms centre number, you can still receive sms,but you can not send them out! when you need to send an sms,you can write this number back. it is found by dialling *#*#4636#*#* in your dialler, then selecting "Phone information", scrolling down and here you can find a field called SMSC. click "Refresh" to check what's your true number is,memorise it and delete it,preferably overwrite somthing on it and clicking "Update". It's a little annoying, but it works for me. I've searched the market, but I didn't find any app to do it automaticly.

Hi Maslelviz
I had the same problem as you and I've applied the same solution and it works but it's annoying to go through this procedure every time I need to send an SMS. I have looked the specs of my G1. The Build No is DMD64, the Kernel Version is 2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37android-build@apa26 #19 and the Firmware version is 1.6.

Can I do the TC5-RC8 update? If not how can I get rid of this My-faves application?

Any solutions/suggestions would be appreciated...

cheers

Well, I just swiched the operator and the problem disappeared It's impossible to get rid of MyFaves, unles you root your phone and install Cyanogen mod http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/category/1-stable-mod/, you can actualy install Android 2.1 with it on your G1, but it's very risky... BTW, when you type this *#*#4636#*#* and you go back to your home screen, you can press and hold home button after that, and your recent aplications will appear. you will see one called "testing" so you can press it and enter that setup without typig that long code, just try to keep that among your recent apps (use it very often) because you cant make a normal shortcutt. Hope that helps, and sorry for a very late reply.
