G1 Dev Phones on Ebay?

My previous G1 died after getting water damage.

My question is: are the ebay auctions for G1 phones legit? Are these the dev versions, or just plain vanilla HTC Dream?

An example of what I am looking at here:

G1 Google Mobile Phone - Warranty - Unlocked - UK Stock

any info appreciated. Cheers

Are you saying that there is no diff between an unlocked HTC Dream and a G1 Dev Phone? That would certainly be cheaper...

In case it isn't obvious I am developing an android application and I think there are some problems with putting an app on the app store without having a valid dev phone (?)

that's a used g1, to get it to be an adp1, you'd need to root it and put the engineering spl on so you could use adb and fastboot with it. (the hardware is the same)

the official adp roms (non-root) are available on htc's site or go with a cyanigen rom if you want to keep root, depending on how you want to test your app.

Let's be clear here:

Unlocked = Can be used with any SIM card from any network.
Dev phone = HTC Dream (aka T-Mobile G1) with an Engineering SPL.

You can put the Engineering SPL on any HTC Dream (official Dev phone or otherwise), thus making it into a dev phone.

There is no way to tell if such an advert on eBay is legit or not. You just have to do what everyone else does and use some common sense (check their feedback, read some of the negative comments) and trust eBay's buyer protection policy.

you can get the unlock code online i used http://www.cellunlock.net/ $10-20 depending on if you can find a discount code.

i bought an unlock code on ebay for my g1. cost me ?2.50 and was with me 5 mins after the auction. expected it not to work but was well impressed

There is no issue with putting an app in the Market without having a valid dev phone (aka ADP). The two have nothing to do with each other. It's not like the Market is going to check to see if you have a dev phone before allowing you to upload your app. Nor do you need a dev phone to put your app on your phone to test it.

To be clear "dev phone" means a phone that has root access that allows you to install custom ROMs, or develop your own. It is not needed in any way to develop applications.

Also, you don't need a dev phone to get root access. You can just follow any of the numerous sets of instructions out there to root your phone, and then it's a dev phone!

This. Root, install the engineering spl, install Cyanogen's rom and you're good. Official dev phones have the design on the back, but that's about it.
