G1 Defanged Recovery, Radio and Firmware Update

I've been trying to find an answer to a few of my questions on on here and xda but I've yet to find a clear answer. Hopefully, some of you guys can help me out...I currently have a G1 and updated it to cyan v4.2.15.1 w/ 10mb hack, my radio is 2.22.19.26I.

1) I've seen that there's a new radio update of 2.22.23.02 and i've also read you need DRC83_base_defanged.zip for the Magic installed so the radio doesn't revert back to 2.22.19.26I whenever upgrading cyan's roms. I've heard people getting stuck at the google startup after wiping because they don't have the defanged base. Do I really need either of these installs? And is the radio update really worth the upgrade?

2) With the new G1 firmware update being rolled out, is this the same thing as the new radio update or is the update a completely separate thing? Also, is the update by any chance in Cyan's roms or would I have to install this from a different source?

I am pretty confused about the new radio, defanged base and the new G1 firmware update. Not sure if they're all correlated with each other. I would just like my G1 to be up to date with the best radio possible (been having some SMS issues lately) and not run into any problems when flashing cyan's future roms. Thanks in advance for the help!

Here is a link to that subject on the A/C.

I updated the radio on my G1 and can't tell any difference in the reception, I haven't flashed a Cyan since then but I have my doubt's that the radio will revert to the old one.

I saw that thread on here, so is this newer radio the complete "minor" firmware upgrade for the G1?

Any chance anyone rolling with the defanged base on here? If so, why?

This defanged base has got me all confused as to why some people are choosing this recovery over the signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721 recovery file for the G1.

This may be late for a reply, but for other people's reference...

1. Cyanogen does not include radio updates in his rom updates, so once you are on Cyanogen, radio updates will not get reverted with Cyanogen updates. Regarding the value of the update, it did not hurt, but I did not notice anything measurable either (But TMobile has had network issues up in Minneapolis for the past two weeks, so it is hard to tell). A simple answer is that the defanged base simply has some of the "extras" removed. The original HTC image will flash the old radio and a few other things. The defanged image exists just because it contains the google apps without the "extras".

2. I believe the firmware update was the same thing as the radio update. On non-rooted phones, the radio was upgraded to the new version with this update. But if you have Cyanogenmod, you will not get OTA updates, so you will need to install the new radio yourself.
