Has anyone else seen either the American remake or the original of this movie?

I have just watched it, and it is one the most disturbing, suspenseful movies I have ever seen.

I don't think anyone could "love" this movie. But I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a really good horror/thriller.
 
Didn't like the remake. Adore the original though, brilliant and disturbing film. No effect in the remake because obviously I knew everything that happens since it was more or less a pointless shot for shot.

I thought the original was superb and didn't need to me remade scene for scene. I think I preferred the acting in the remake, but I think because I knew what was happening scene for scene, it lessened the effect of the movie for me.
 
I really hate this film. I've seen both, though I don't know why I expected the remake to be any different. I hate the finger wagging at the audience and I hate the holier-than thou and self important attitude of Haneke and his apparent contempt for the people watching his films.

I know this might not be his intention, and I could be missing the point of the film completely, but I couldn't get past that when watching this. One of the few films to make me actually angry. Hate it.
 
Yup, pretentious drivel. The most disturbing thing about these films is the overwhelming 'Emporer's New Clothes' aspect which seems to have worked a treat for plenty of folks who want to see things and meanings that simply aren't there.

Watched the original a year or so ago - actually watched it as it was talked about here.
Jesus - that film stayed with me for weeks - found it very upsetting.........had a real impact on me - very unsettling.
Then like a fool went to see the remake - and although it lost the impact of the original as I knew what was coming I was still spooked!
As for it being pretentious - sorry that passed me by - I was too spooked to notice!
 
I mentioned this film in the "disturbing films " thread. I've seen the original but not the remake.

I thought it was a very difficult film, very challenging, but well worth seeing nonetheless. People have accused Michael Haneke of making films to deliberately shock the viewer but I disagree in this case. There's a point to the film, even though it seems senseless...but you have to work it out for yourself because that's kind of the point.
 
This film is completely diabolical, I hated it. The 'message' to it all is so ridiculous and flawed it's not even funny. Why do I want to see a film that tries to makes me feel bad about watching it?! Apparently what the director is trying to tell us is that we, the viewers, are sick and disgusting because we want to see these people being tortured, which is complete bullshit on so many levels. I don't go to watch a horror/thriller because I want to see these people being tortured, I go to see the film because I want to be thrilled, I want to see these people escape the situation. :sleep:
In case anyone was wondering, there is actually a fairly decent thriller hidden behind the 'message' crap but it's spoiled so much by all this talking to the camera nonsense and THAT scene near the end of the film that it makes this film almost impossible to enjoy. Avoid at all costs!

Tommy Gnorsis from Hedwig goes psycho! he was awfully (mainly) pleasent in that film as well.

and its one of those types of movies that most will never watch again. i am sure too sure how well the recent bluray release of this will do.
 
Haneke has said he made the remake because he originally wanted it to be an American film. One of the points he was making is that too often in American films, the experiences characters go through ultimately works to their advantage - that they overcome, and come out of it as better people. Funny Games, of course, trashes this completely, a reminder of how complacent and narrowly thought-out a lot of supposed human drama is. Yes, I'd agree it's pretentious, and a little too finger-wagging, but it is also brilliantly made. Not quite as good as Hidden though.
 
I watched the remake of this first and then went back to watch the original because I wanted to see how perfect it matched up - and it really did. It amazed me how it was literally copied to perfection scene for scene - although because of the difference in language and cast, it still gave each film a slightly different feel. It's a film you don't like to say you liked, but I thought both versions were fantastic and chilling.

Have to say I actually preferred the remake - partly because it was the one I watched first & partly because I adore Michael Pitt, thought he was superb in it! He plays characters like that so well.
