Funimation To Release Dragonball Season 1 in September!?

I'm not going to get into the "Which is better" debate for aspect ratio again, but why would you not want the series remastered? Do you really like faded video that is full of grain over a beautiful vibrant picture?

BTW, they better put DB in 16x9. It sucks not having GT in it, so now the series is out of synch with each other.

I feel the same, so hopefully I can answer this for him. It's the cropping to make it widescreen. If I really want it to fill my tv I'll use zoom. Otherwise I like to see the whole thing because it's not always just the hair and feet that get chopped off.

Agreed. We should wait for an official statement from the company to confirm it one way or the other.

EDIT: I just checked Wal-Mart's website, and the listing is not only still there, but still lists Septeraber 15th as the release date. It even has a full description of the set.

I watched this show during it's first run on Toonami, but I still haven't seen the King Piccolo/Piccolo Jr arcs. This'll be perfect.

I still wish FUNimation would reconsider the widescreen & Auto DVNR treatment for this re-release. Nobody liked it for Z. Why do it for the original Dragon Ball?

New FUNi Sept solicits slowly making their way around online

Dragonball Season 1 - tentative release of Sept 15

*Since I have all of the original FUNi sets (+the Australia release of Season 1), I'm not sure if I'll double dip on this or not. I guess I'll decide based on if it's widescreen or not

Well, that's perfect confirmation for me. Now to wait and see if it's the faux-widescreen or not, since RightStuf didn't list it as such. But then again, considering that they didn't list the orange bricks as such, I'm still playing it safe.

The colors look terrible in these sets. I was watching the Vegetto battle and the man looked like a bloody Halloween decoration (i.e. his blue gi looked black). Also, much detail gets lost (espicially in the early and middle sets) during shaking of the screen, espicially. And there's a lot of shaking of the screen.

FUNimation probably realized their mistake in cropping the series and left GT alone (or it could be because of their masters not being printed film). Dragonball, I hear, is in better condition their DBZ prints so there's really no need for remastering or cropping (namely because their remastering is cheap and automated, as opposed to Japan's DBOX masters).

Besides, it's an old series. The dirt is part of the charm.

FUNimation from the panel they had at AnimeNext. They indicated that it wasn't true. You can find the panel information here.

So, it's beginning to look as though FUNi flat out lied to eveybody about the Wal-Mart listing being false now that another site (much less RightStuf) has it listed, with MagicBox suggesting that FUNi is pleading ignorance (i.e., claiming they really didn't know about it at the time, and were "caught off guard" as it were). Still, if FUNi did li to us, then that would indeed mean that Wal-Mart leaked something they weren't supposed to...

However, I'm beginning to think that the initial response may have just been a more "polite" way of saying "Look, could you not bother us with this right now? We already have enough problems." Of course, that's complete conjecture on my part. Still, I refer of course to the One Piece streaming issue, which last I checked still has yet to be resolved one way or the other.

Personally, I'm hoping FUNi doesn't go ballistic and start asking us to choose between "Dragon Ball Season 1" and "legal One Piece streaming". Still, if it did come to that, I would choose the Dragon Ball set since that was the show that started it all (back when FUNimation was a completely different company). In any case, that's for another topic, actually.

Suffice it to say, it would now seem that Anime Expo is when we'll know once and for all what's going on (I hope).

The latter, at the con that went on this weekend.

I'm not saying the possibility of a set being released is zero, I'm just saying until further word this is 'a mistake' and should be treated as one.
