Funimation To Release Dragonball Season 1 in September!?

One of the reasons given for FUNi's Dragon Ball Z release being in widescreen was because it would've been too costly to repair extensive glue damage at the top of the film masters, and by cropping it into a widescreen aspect ratio, they lose the top and bottom of the pictures, and thus didn't have to worry about it. Of course, then they could also proclaim, "OMG!!!! DBZ in teh widescreen HD!!!"

Dragon Ball GT likely was kept 4:3 because the film prints were in much better shape.

I would have to imagine that Dragon Ball's original prints are in considerably worse shape than Dragon Ball Z's.

I hope that if this is true that these Season Sets are accompanied with two additional double features matching the DBZ ones: Curse of the Blood Rubies [uncut and redubbed] with Sleep Princess in Devil's Castle, and Mystical Adventure with Path to Power!

Please FUNi, take my money!

They didn't HAVE to create their own remastering, considering how bad it turned out. Toei already had an extensively man-made remastered print (as opposed to the automated FUNi print) of the series made and selling like hotcakes over in Japan.

Heck, fans' been perfectly content to buy a complete release of their crusty old prints, so one must wonder what the DragonBall team at FUNimation was thinking when they did this.

One Piece FUNimation's biggest fallacies is how it keeps trying to make a twenty-year old Japanese cartoon look new, cool, and hip with either rewritten scripts or new computerized music scores. I suppose eventually it had to affect the footage too. And now we have Vegetto the Halloween decoration.

I'm guesisng that someone in Japan will hear of this and will be forced to re-release Dragonball in their own HD widescreen format similar to DBZ becoming Dragonball Kai.

I know I will be buying this. So I can have the entire Dragonball storyline (I don't count GT into this. I mostly mean the DB manga storyline.).

So who said that they needed to repair the glue damage? The prints were as they were. It wasn't like the glue caused the picture to be completely unwatchable. FUNimation could've fixed the process manually without an auto DVNR but went with the latter because it's quick and cheap.

I've no complaints. I just believe that companies should leave as much footage as possible in the shows/films they decide to release. Restoring something is fine, and it is greatly appreciated. I have purchased Dragon Ball/Z/GT in multiple forms. I have the original Pioneer releases of the edited Dragon Ball Z episodes and their releases of the first three Dragon Ball Z Movies: Dead Zone, The World's Stongest, and Tree of Might. I also have most of the single disc Uncut FUNimation releases of Dragon Ball Z episodes, the FUNi releases of Dragon Ball Z Movies 4-13, the single releases of Dragon Ball GT, the episodes and the special, the Dragon Ball: The Saga of Goku edited set, the Dragon Ball: The Saga of Goku/Emperor Pilaf Uncut import, all of the FUNi releases of the various Dragon Ball Saga sets, FUNi's Dragon Ball movies and the special, and all of the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT season sets. If I'm missing any, I'll edit this post later. My point is that I have invested a lot of money into the Dragon Ball franchises, and despite the fact that I do not agree with the way Dragon Ball Z was formatted for the season sets, I still purchased them. Why? I am a huge fan of the show, and I do not want to seem ungrateful for the work FUNimation put forth. However, if there is a chance that FUNimation is indeed releasing Dragon Ball in season sets, I would appreciate the opportunity to see it done in the proper formate. If they would like a widescreen release, I am not against it. They should not make any cuts to the material, though. This means that if I am going to purchase it AND be fully satisfied, I don't want to see any missing hair, heaRAB, legs, etc. It's still very disconcerting to see the first ending of Dragon Ball Z with "edits". It's the same thing for the Super Saiyan transformations with missing hair. It's like Nixon gave hippies a haircut or something. I just want a "proper" release. Is that so wrong?

It's been mentioned by Jacob T. Paschal in the Funimation Rep thread, but I thought I should mention it here as well. Not only is the Wal-Mart listing STILL there, but now the listing has cover art, even though FUNi STILL says the listing is incorrect

Somebody is lying, probably in an attempt to avoid getting the fans' hopes up. Either way, and in the worRAB of one Ricky Ricardo, FUNi is going to have some "'splaining" to do come Anime Expo. Either Wal-Mart got this listing from an untrustworthy source (I can certainly rule out Wal-Mart's servers being hacked), or Funimation is outright lying about the listing being false. As others have mentioned, you would think the listing would be removed by now. However, now that it has cover art, this changes all the rules. As Jacob and others have pointed out, somebody could get fired over this regardless of what the situation really is.

Again, Funimation is going to have some serious explaining to do. If not at Anime Expo, then eventually; if Funimation doesn't say anything, they're going to get endless questions from fans about it.

In any case, assuming the listing is legit, I will hope that it has the original full frame video, as well as the original Japanese voices; after hearing her as both Tetsuro (Galaxy Express 999) and as Hiroshi Suzuishi/Pidge (Golion/Voltron), I am very much interested in hearing Masako Nozawa as Son Goku.

FYI: While Funimation claims to still not have the DVD rights to the first 13 episodes, they do have the TV rights, which means they can have them broadcast on TV whenever they want (as long as a network is willing to broadcast them, of course).

I see, & I agree missing Hair & legs is annoying, but for the most part it is tolerable, I just Hope The DB boxed sets sell as well as the DBZ/GT did, the way I see it if existing sets of old animes like Dragonball, Yuyu, Slayers, Case closedl, etc, sell well. we might get more dubs or new qcquisitions of older series (Like More Seasons of Case closed,, & Mabye Redubs of Sailor moon The Yuyu & Slayers movies, or Like Ive Hoped for years a Dub of one of the Dr.Slump animes)

Thankfully, hope springs eternal. Toei is apparently not the easiest company to work with, and hope is probably the best tool for getting Sailor Moon to come back to the states. Toei would need a pretty convincing argument. If any company can do it, FUNimation can.

As for Dr. Slump: I know a lot of people who would love to see it make it stateside, but I've asked at conventions before, and FUNi's answer is always that they have yet to try to acquire it. Again, we can always hope.

With Case Closed, I could see more episode being licensed with strong sales of the season sets. That, however, requires more retailers to carry them. We've carried the first three season sets of Case Closed at Best Buy, but we never received Season Four or Five. Heck, I had to request that we get the second Ouran High School Host Club, Vandread, and more just to get them into the store. Guess what happened when we did receive them? They sold quite well, especially Vandread. More Case Closed sets is probably a better bet than Dr. Slump right now.

I wouldn't count anything out. FUNimation seems to be on a roll lately, and let's all hope that they can keep it going. If they've managed to get their hanRAB on the rights to release the long awaited Uncut Dragon Ball episodes and first movie, then anything is possible.

This is the exact same situation as with DBZ back in 2006. I don't think anyone got fired over that, but it is still pretty hilarious we're travelin' down the same path.

GT wasn't in widescreen. FUNimation should have learned their lesson.

The widescreen is distracting, and the darkened colors are ugly as all heck.

Even though I already own the Commander Red and Tien Shinhan sagas of Dragon Ball on DVD, I'm glad to see that Funimation is going to re-release the series on DVD. I would prefer if the series was in its original format, but I can live with the series in widescreen, since I own the History of Trunks/Bardock, the Father of Goku double feature steelbook and seasons 1, 3, and 4 of Dragon Ball Z on DVD.

With this coming to DVD, my wallet's going to be crying.

Awesome! Not a huge fan of the whole faux-widescreen, but heck, we finally get the original 13 FUNi Dragonball episodes on DVD. I'm sold.

775 minutes, hmm? That should translate to roughly...38 episodes. That would put it about in the middle of the Red Ribbon Army saga, wouldn't it?
