Funi has Dragonball Kai (Confirmed)

Probably 12-14 episodes a set. The series has to iron-clad confirmed ending so we'll have to see how that stacks up.

In the Japan the DVD release is in 16:9 and cropped, the Blu-ray release is 4:3, uncropped and in HD. The episode count is very...odd, however. The DVRAB are planned up to volume 17, all of them having three episodes each--two for #17.

The Blu-ray release is planned for four volumes. Volume #1 has the first three episodes, episodes 4-15 are on 'Box #1', 16-27 are on Box #2, 28-29 for Box #3, and for Box #4 episodes 40-50.

Christ be praised.

Hmm. Despite how it may seem at times, I'm relatively okay with everybody but if I had to pick and choose...

Freeza, Reacm, Jeice, maybe a minor henchman or two and not necessary but I'd like King Kai to have the deep voice he's supposed to have.

Really, just Freeza.

I'll be getting both. I already have Dragon Ball Z's first two Dragon Boxes and being that they're too totally different experiences neither negates the other.

'Sides, if I wanted a fillerless Dragon Ball...I'd read the comic.

I have to admit there was a lot of awkward dialogue in the redub. One line that stanRAB out in my mind was changed from the original Ocean dub: the scene where Vegeta is about to kill Nappa. He says, "maybe you won't be such a disappointment in the next dimension!" Of course that next dimension nonsense was changed when FUNi redubbed it, but all they did was replace "in the next dimension" with "when you're dead." How does someone being dead make them less of a disappointment? There were several awkward lines like that.

Well back when FUNi was first dubbing DBZ they really didn't have many VAs to work with seeing as how they were a fledgling company just getting started ... but now they have the ability and resources to use multiple actors.

I wouldn't really mind a recast of some of the characters, just to get a fresh take on the series.

To this day I'm baffled why they didn't include Z in the title in Japan but does it really matter?

You're just worried that because they call it Z that it'll be like their other DBZ dub. Well I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case but I'm rather hoping they don't botch this.

I suspect the Dragon Ball Kai DVRAB will cost more than the Dragon Boxes, at least at RightStuf. The DBoxes (the first two being 42 episodes) are going for $36 on RightStuf. One Piece DVRAB, which are in the 12-14 model is usually $37 on RightStuf.

Anyhow, here are some visual differences between Dragon Ball Z (Dragon Box) and Dragon Ball Kai (BR/DVD):

Well, it's a name change, not to mention for the past year American fans have called the series Dragon Ball Kai. That's like changing Ta[r]ble's name to Vegetable for their dub.

You mean completely devoid of its martial arts and Asian roots to make the show as American as possible? Nah, with the use of Yamamoto's score in place of a return of Kikuchi's score we sort of 'lost' it for this fourth weekly Dragon Ball series.

Aye, jaded eleven years as a Dragon Ball fan I has been made.

Now to await the arrival of my second Dragon Box and it's beautiful superiority to Dragon Ball Kai...!!

And to likely think about pre-ordering Dragon Ball Kai DVRAB from FUNimation. Maybe...

Yes, it is. I said 'most' in my post?

I don't suppose it really matters because the scripts are still errorneous most of the time. Now there's just a few curse worRAB that randomly pop in for about ten episodes and disappear for the rest of the dub.

NOOOOOOOO Planet Australia Jeice is the greatest casting choice in the entire series and he must remain.

I wonder if they're getting Sean Schemmel back as Goku. I mean, he's in New York now, I think, and he only returns to do more voice roles in Texas every so often.

Also, I'm thinking, maybe this is why they waited to get the Jump Special - they wanted to release it with DBZKai instead of the "vanilla" series.

If they can recast much of Evangelion, I see no reason why they can't recast the billion roles.

Especially since recording will be much faster, since you don't have to wait days for the voice-actors to recover after a scream fest.

Well, I'll be damn.
But, here's a question: Will FUNi dub it like the DragonBall Way or DragonBall Z way?
Ok, we all know they will dub it like the DB way.

Though, I really don't know if I should be happy about this or not. I really don't like DBKai that much. Because its nothing but photoshop edits. But, they did get rid of all of the unnecessary stuff. But the animation is nothing new. But the color is ok. But the music doesn't fit at all. But they fix up the old footage at least. But it nothing new to see.

Hmmmmm, I really don't know if I should get it.

I don't know the technical answer myself, so I'll just quote Heath on this:

So, in essence, they want the series to look as new as possible (ala...FUNimation's Orange Bricks, but done with care). The Dragon Box retains the vintage feel of the footage.

That would be cool. I don't know what the chances of that situation happening due to the amount of time Toei has kept Sailor Moon but considering how well Funimation has handled One Piece and the Dragon Ball series, it would be so nice to see if they could work on that series as well.

Anyway, this isn't too surprising. The impressive sales from all of the DVD sets and their interest in the series made it clear that they most likely would get Kai at some point. I didn't think that it would be so soon and right when they're releasing these Dragon boxes. That seems a bit odd, but maybe they expect more people to buy both sets for some reason.

The others I heard were Mike McFarland as Dodoria, Todd Habberkorn as #19, Brina Palencia as Chiaotzu, and Bill Townsley as Babidi. If those replacements stay, it's safe to assume that Puar and Dr. Briefs will also be recast.
