Fun with ad libbed dialouge in crowd scenes..

I'm listening to the Dimension X Story, one of the original Turtle series episodes. The turtles are all arguing and their voices run over each other. But if you listen close enough, you can understand what Rob Paulson as Raph says...

To Donatello:'What are you talking about, you carry a stick!'

18 years later and I'm still getting laughs out of new unheard of lines ;)...

Anyone else try and listen to the hidden gems in 'mass hysteria or crowd talk' scenes?

Well, it's not really hidden but in an episode of Drawn Together, Toot uses a Legend of Xandir cheatbook to make Xandir go to fat camp with her and pretend to be her husband.

At one point, the "popular fat girls" find the cheatbook and show the crowd what Toot has been doing to Xandir by entering in a cheat and his arms turn into monkies and the crowd gasps with murmurs going on and then you can hear "How does that help with video games?!"

I've just always loved it when the writers point out their own flaws with plot points.

The KOTH ep. Bobby Rae where Bobby is protesting against the soda machines. He's like, "I used to be thinner, and more mellow!" And all the kids are murmuring and agreeing and you hear one girl say amongst it, "when was he ever thin?"

This doesn't seem like an animation-specific topic, but it probably happens more often in animation because all dialogue is dubbed in.

One of my favorites of these is from The Simpsons episode where Skinner and Krabapple are debating the school budget and if you listen closely you can always hear at least one guy talking loudly over everyone else. "The taxes! The finger thing means the taxes!"

There's also a South Park episode where a crowd of people is saying "peas and carrots peas and carrots", because apparently that's what extras are often instructed to say in movies (since it makes the mouth move a lot or something).

I love when they make fun of scenes like that. Case in point the Spongebob episode Band Geeks, in which all of the characters are blathering away, but all they're saying is "blah blah blah."

I remember in some episode of Billy & Mandy in the background you can hear a man on the TV say something like "You're pragnant? That's the third time this week!"

They actually have a good amount of that on the Simpons that they pointed out in the commentary for "The PTA Disbands". There's a good scene in there where Dan improves one of the crowd members saying "Taxes? how could we forget about the taxes?" Dan's good at improv though. From doing bum rants in "Bart Sells His Soul" to a lot of good Homer lines (SMRT from "Homer Goes to College" and Homer aruging with himself in the Alaskaian artic during the Simpsons movie).

I remember watching a Pokemon episode that featured an audience watching a show, and I could hear someone saying, "This is better than Cats!" amidst the crowd walla.

Um, no, not at all. This thread is about actual humorous lines of dialogue in crowd scenes, not misheard lines of dialogue that caused some kind of controversy.

My favorite is still Dan Castellaneta's "The taxes! The finger thing means the taxes!" that people have already mentioned, but another great one from "The Simpsons" appears in AABF07 "Wild Barts Can't Be Broken" - after the "Adults/Kids" musical number, everyone is angrily shouting at the senior citizens of Springfield, and amid it all, you can hear Ralph Wiggum say "Somebody should iron you!"

It's "Good teenagers, take off your clothes", but really "Good tiger, take off and go". Even then, it's irrelevant to the discussion.

In the Rocko's Modern Life episode 'with friends like these' Heffer and filburt are both handcuffed to Rocko becuase he won two tickets to a sporting event, and didnt have enough for all 3 of them to go.

They begin arguing as they drag Rocko behind, causing him to get badly injured in the process.

At one point admist Heffer and Filburt's constant arguing if you listen closely you can hear Heffer say 'im Rocko's best friend! Why this one time I had only ONE french fry left, and did I give it to Rocko? Nooo becuase I could tell he wasnt hungry.'

Not gut-busting funny, but its all that comes to mind for me right now.

I know this is anime, but I always love hearing the crowd boo Roy Mustang in the FMA episode "Fullmetal Vs. Flame": "You just want a promotion!" "Give me back my girlfriend!"

Then there are also scenes where dialog is played under main dialog. It could be anything, since it's not really meant to be payed attention too. You're supposed to be listening to the main characters lines.

Turtles example:

'Return of Dregg'. April is talking to someone on the phone. If you listen real close, you can tell it's the same dialog heard on a TV scene earlier in the show, only super muffled.

There were a lot of things in the background of Pokemon. During the aquatic show at the Cerulean Gym, you hear some moron cheering for Arbok despite the fact that TR attacked the gym. Then before the Ash/Gary battle when they decided who would send out their Pokemon first, you hear some guy say that he went to school with Gary.

From The Simpsons:

Homer Loves Flanders: (after the Flanders family walks into church)
"There's Ned Flanders."
"The fallen one."
"The evil one."
"I bet he's the one who wrote 'Homer' all over the bathroom."

Hurricane Neddy:
(after Ned says he's gonna run people over with his car) "...What'd he say?"

Bye Bye Nerdie:
(at various points in Lisa's presentation to the scientists) "Let's not listen!"

From Family Guy:

The King is Dead:
Random man in the board room: "I haven't had sex in four years!"
