Fuel Tank Paint Wear - Down to Metal

The other week when I took the seat of the bike (2010 EG classic) to give it a bath I noticed two wear/chip marks where the seat touches the tank that are down to the metal.

I went to the dealer and they took off the seat, looked at the tank and the seat took pictures, they said they never saw anything like this and said they would have to deal with harley and the would let me know. I haven't herd anything yet.

Has anyone ever had or seen this? If so what was done to fix it

got me thinking about the scotch guard film. i may do this. i noticed on my '10 the other day some wear in the same place you are talking about.

I haven't seen anything like that, an occasional scuff mark, but never anything down to metal. Are you using the stock seat? If you are, once HD have fixed it, which I think they should barring anything unusual, it might be worth covering the affected area with protective tape. It's called stone guard or something like that.

As another poster mentioned, I think it's made by Scotch tape or 3M. It is typically used on the front of cars and trucks to protect them from stone chips.

I have wear spots on mine as well. One is down to the metal, but I put a Sundowner on it so I am sure they will give me flak. Might have to point this out though since I am not the only one.

The product is called 3M Chip Protect. It's really expensive to have it laid on your car/bike. I found pamphlets about it at the HD Dealer and at a auto specialty shop that installs it.

The pamphlets have a small sample (1.5"x3") of the Chip Protect inside of it. It's the perfect size to slap on your tank, under the front of the seat.

I hope this helps. Cheers!

Sounds like you have a good rep with your dealer, a lot of them would of just blown you
off and made some kind of fat guy joke.
