Fuel Problems on a 96 Chevy 1500 pickup?

It has a 5.7L V8. It is low on gas but has enough to go down the street for about 10-15 miles. It won't start but when I try to crank it, it sounds like it is about to fire up but won't. It turns over just fine. Anybody have any suggestions about what the problem might be?
 
do a real simple test get can of starting fluid lift air cleaner assembly a little and have somone crank while u spray into throttle body if veh starts you either have a plug feul filter or a bad pump if it still doesnt start let me know [email protected]

Sounds like a weak fuel pump. Keep in mind that if you check the fuel pressure it is a 65 psi fuel system and won't even start at less than about 50 psi. Good luck.
