Fucking Hard Drive!!!

MY FUCKING HARD DRIVE JUST GAVE OUT IN MY MAIN SYSTEM! SHIT! IT KEEPS GETTING SLOWER AND SLOWER...WINDOWS TAKES ABOUT 6 MINUTES TO BOOT NOW...

It all started when I was running AVG Anti-Virus, and I noticed it was taking THREE MINUTES to scan a fucking .dll file...you all know how small those are. My hard drive light would turn on for about 10 seconds, then turn off for one second, then repeat. So I flipped the power switch on my power supply, then proceeded to turn on my system again...shit. Four minutes of boot time now, and my system was slow as shit. Now, my hard drive makes weird clicking noises...I think the arm in it was failing...

Just for the record, it was a 40GB Seagate Barracuda, 7200 RPM, 2MB Cache.

run scandisk, with thorough scan enabled. you probably have a small group of bad clusters which the drive is struggling to read. IDE buses generally wait about eight seconds before they complain to the system, and the system will usually ask them to repeat the read attempt several times before giving up.

here's my solution: (1) thorough, hardware-level disk scan. yes, sectors will be marked bad. i miss the old scandisk, which provided a MAP of clusters and told you what the fuck it was doing.
(2) full defragmentation.

that will probably greatly help. if you want more help, get rid of everything you can from your startup group, the 'run' sections of system.ini and win.ini, and any 'load' comment in your registry.

If you can't get a better defragmentation program the windows one will do but norton's or many other companies' defrag programs are faster and more thorough.

Another idea which worked very well for me is to buy another *small* maybe five gig hd and install windows on that. Install any and everything else on the forty and use that for any media you have. Windows will work much faster including explorer (if you use that as your browser) and anything else based in windows. If you cannot get an extra hd the least you can do is partition your hd and have windows installed on the partition, it will still be faster but not a fraction as much.

Prolly it's jsut that you've had your hard drive for too long go get sum like uber fast pwnage raptor 10000 rpm drive off of newegg.com or sumthing (that's gonna be really fast)

I have an update on the hard drive...I reformatted, reinstalled, then everything was working. I play UT2004, and my system hangs. It hung because I put in a shitty Powmax power supply and my video card was not getting enough power. So I take the PSU out, put in my old Soyo PSU, and then guess what? It can't find my IDE drive! Then it gets worse. I smell something that smells like peanut butter and piss. I'm thinking, "Oh shit! Something blew!" I open up my case, sniffed around. Yep. Hard drive controller board blew. Now I wasted four fucking hours reinstalling! I tested both PSU's with a PSU tester, and they are both good, so I guess it was some kind of fluke. I feel pretty fucked right now...

"flukes" don't happen with electronics. the most beautiful thing about the binary world: it's either on or it's off.

continue working until you figure out the problem.

I did figure out the problem...The logic board blew on the hard drive. It can't detect my primary master drive when I boot...Fuck. Oh well, I'm buying a new one at the computer show this weekend, so good riddance to bad rubbish. I needed a bigger drive anyway, and this just accelerated the process.

I'm aiming for a 120GB Samsung SpinPoint drive, preferably with an 8MB cache, and SATA. The Samsungs are fast and quiet. Much better than the IBM Deskstar 75GXP (Snickers...). I would never touch a Hitachi/IBM hard drive with a 10 foot pole...Too bad my laptop has one.
