Fuck Windows!

First off, let me say that I run Windows Server 2003 on my workstation. It is by far the most stable OS I have used, even more stable than Red Hat 9 or Mandrake Linux 9.1. However, I have noticed a huge glitch that seems to be inherent in XP/Server 2003. It may also be present in Windows 2000, but I have never actually used Windows 2000 for more than five minutes, so I don't really know if it is there.

The glitch is a scary one...one that I discovered myself, and It is also a glitch that I am sure many people take the hard way out to fix, reinstalling Windows. The glitch? The IP Security (IPSEC) service. I have had this happen to me twice now. First on XP, and now on Server. Randomly, for no apparent reason, this service will randomly destroy itself, and refuse to start or shut down again. It effectively keeps any IP address from being accessed by a DHCP server, which means that you are screwed if you are on a broadband/home network. You can't get on the internet, because you can't get an IP from your router/ISP.

The good news? There is a fix.

Go to Start -> Run

Type in "Services.msc"

Hit enter/click OK

Scroll down till you find the IPSEC security service. Right click it, click properties, then select "Disable." Click "OK," then reboot.

Viola! You are back online!

I would recommend doing this to anyone running XP/Server 2003. It will save you a headache later.

MaxPower, has this ever happened to you at your workplace?

lol, if you're going to run linux get a real distro. www.gentoo.org or www.debian.org then it'll be infinately more stable than any of microsoft's attempts. also alot of people complain that linux isn't stable because their kde/gnome, x windows crashes. realise that linux isn't the gui. if you're running a gui on a linux server than i would have to laugh at you. just my .02

Microsfoft OS's have their place on desktops, linux/BSD have no rival in the server market.

btw, it's long been known that microsoft's implementation of IPSEC is crap. if you want a REAL vpn solution i'd suggest Checkpoint VPN-1

No. But that's an old one that has been seen in XP/2000 before. There's actually some vulnerabilities known in MS IPsec. Which I find Ironic.

For fucks sake, can you people read?! I said I run Windows Server 2003 on my WORKSTATION. Also, I know that XWindows and Gnome and KDE cause crashes, but that never happened to me. I got the old freezing and lots of other shit, such as programs quitting unexpectedly. No, I wasn't using shitty memory. I was using Crucial RAM.

I use this OS because it is extraordinarily stable, and it runs all of my Win$hit programs. I used to run Linux, but I now run this.

Fuck Microsoft! They can suck my dick!

Good thing Longhorn is going to kill them...that OS is really going to piss the OEMs off...
