I ran sideways into a curb on ice and caused some damage to the passenger side front end. A visual inspection found the control arm was bent so I had it replaced. However, the vehicle could not be aligned within specs. I've had three separate shops tell me I the steering knuckle is bent, as well as the strut. The vehicle has 72,000 miles on it.
The options I have been given are:
- Buy a used strut and steering knuckle assembly. This will also include include a wheel hub and bearing and a ball joint.
- Use new parts which come as separate pieces - hub, hub bearing, ball joint, steering knuckle.
In either case I plan on having new struts and strut mounts installed on both sides.
The cost for using the used parts (w/new struts and mounts + alignment) is $870. The cost for new parts (w/new struts/mounts + alignment) is $1,500. The shops recommended going with the used parts for cost savings. I was told even if the wheel hub/bearing went bad in the future and had to be replaced it would still be cheaper than going with new parts.
I would appreciate any comments or recommendations.
