From Sleeper To Success

Was there a time when a sleeper of a cartoon jumped the shark in one story and because of that, the show would be a cult following and then a success in the ratings?

I'm not entirely clear what you're asking. Normally "Jump the Shark" means the moment when a show starts going downhill, but you're asking about a show gaining a cult following and became a success after doing so?

I'm interested, but slightly confused.

I think Wolf is saying that after the show veered off from its intended plot, or somewhat unappealing to it's original fans, it was viewed as favorable to a greater audience. I don't know how to word it better.

Only thing I can think of is Family Guy, which was a sleeper hit back during it's first three seasons. Then, once Fox gave it another shot due to DVD sales, it came back with lousy writing, terrible gags, and a LOT less character development, yet it's become more popular than ever.

Family Guy isn't as bad these days as people make it out to be. Yes, its worse than before but every once in a while they air a great episode. A few examples are the Peter-Stewie "bonding" episode and the 100th episode.

Well, true, but I was going more along the lines of how it's steered off so far from the original seasons, yet it's turned out to be the second-biggest animated hit Fox has ever had (going by Tednut's post).

Well, FOX hasn't had that many great adult cartoons. The only ones besides Simpsons and FG are Futurama and American Dad. And I guess some people would consider King of the Hill and The Critic although I never really got into those shows.

Uuummmmmmhumbadumdum.

Well, Invader ZIM, according to Nick, didn't get enough ratings to justify it's budget. However, after it was cancelled, it became the leading icon of the world's biggest cartoon cult and obsession to date.

Have you seen those DeviantART galleries? ohJebus.

Not exactly, since it ended as a sleeper. It had to be still going and veer off from where it originally was before ending to gain entry onto this list. Same thing for MLaaTR.

would Totally Spies be classifield as a sleeper to success? At least in the USA, it was cancelled after one season on ABC Family and got a 2nd chance on Cartoon Network? (Elsewhere around the world, it was a immediate success)

Greetings fellow XJ-9 fan!! Do you use one of his wallpapers as well? :p :D XD

I guess this topic is really only applicable to shows made within the last 15 years or so, since the advent of the internet. Man, I can't really think of any aside from Family Guy. A ton of movies, but not really any TV shows. It would seem that once a show is gone, it very rarely gets a reprieve (yeah, Family Guy is an exception, but it's already been established that the people at the 'BOX' network are idiots).
