Anybody have an opinion on this movie? I personally liked it; it captured the mood of the late '60s/hippie era really well and was very creative in the animation department, even with a really low budget. OTOH, the sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, SUCKED. It had NO plot, wasn't nearly as funny, and seemed to go on and on, even at 70-some minutes. There was even a 5-10 minute psychedelic montage in the middle of the movie, so people on pot could be turned on, I suppose. Anyone else seen it and care to comment?
 
I saw that film last year, actually. It's hard to believe that the film got an X rating when it first came out, but today it is pretty much classified as either PG-13 or R. not like it matters anyway!

This could definitely be conisdered one of the strangest cartoon films of all time, but it did a great job with capturing the scene of the time, like how "The Great Gatsby" captured its' own time. Ralph Bakashi (sp?) had another good film a decade later with "American Pop."
 
well, the fritz creator robert crumb hated the film. he never even wanted it produced to begin with..i havent read much of the actual fritz comics, so i can't really compare. after looking at alot of crumb's other great work though, i think it's safe to say that your better off with the originals... imo there were some really funny parts of the film and tons of downright disturbing and sad elements..the disturbing, sick and sad far outweighning the good..i have way too many bad images in my head to recommened this movie to anybody.
 
I've had this movie on video for 'bout 10 years, long before I probably should've even seen it. :D Mmmm... really over the top and the squirm factor few cartoons ever achieve. You're more likely to be uncomfortable by the sheer badness of an animated film (see either of Filmation's fairy tale sequels) than by lurid content.... but Fritz is the exception. Cartoon animals having orgies, doing drugs, some racist and anti-Semitic imagery... A Neo-Nazi junkie rabbit on a motorcycle. Saw "Street Fight" (formerly C**nskin) in one of my classes this year- more of the same with some grotesque mobster queens and a spin on "Song of the South". Y'know, you're just too distracted to really tell if Fritz or Streetfight is good on its own merits because it's relentless. Then again, as I said... Bakshi's lurid features will inevitably always be sought out because they're a novelty whereas his version of "Lord of the Rings" is one more entry in the library of bad kiddie fare. Imagine if he'd let loose on Middle Earth as he did with his other movies. :evil:
 
Some people call the Seventies The Silver Age because it had so many good movies, movies that were edgy and upset people. "Fritz the Cat" is one of those. Would they make that now? It's definitely not a feel-good film.

A friend thinks "Wizards" is better than "The Lord of the Rings."
 
I'm a Robert Crumb fan. This movie changed the face on animation forever. Its twisted and sick humor brought about a new kind of animation into the world. Since then we've had such great animators and artists like Bill Plympton, Craig McCraken (sp?), Mike Judge, Don Hertzfeldt, Terry Gilliem (sp?), Jhonen Vasquez, John K, and Richard Williams.

The second movie was ok, but the first was classic.
 
I thought Ralph Bakshi did this movie. I guess my sources were wrong.

I believe there was a film documentary about Robert Crumb that was made a few years ago called "Crumb."
 
You got a good point about 70's having the climate to produce such movies like Midnight Cowboy and Blazing Saddles.

I personally prefer "Fire and Ice" to "Wizards" and Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings" only because it's has similar feel to Beastmaster and you can't beat the dude with the big axe.
 
Wizards IS better than Lord of the Rings. Though if you're talking the live-action version Lord has a slight edge.

Fritz was a great film. Funny, disturbing, tragic, wierd, but not as off-putting as Heavy Traffic or Coonskin. Bakshi's da man, and I still want to see his directer's cut of Cool World. (It would be nice to see a GOOD version.)
 
Why was there a Cool World Super NES game? And why is it so plentiful wherever used games are sold?

I can't imagine how you'd play it...I mean, I have an idea, but it's not pretty and I don't care to think about it....
 
I always wanted to rent that out of sick curiousity but I didn't have an SNES at the time. From what I read in gaming mags it sucked. Although, to be fair so did the Roger Rabbit NES game.
 
I would like to see him resurrected and continued through the decades to now.
He was killed in -76 and could resurrect within an hour with an argument with the guards of the purgatory and send him back to where he was killed. He takes off the icepick and runs away to where he can feel safe. He collects himself and flies home to NYC. Within a year, the Disco culture is born and Fritz is curious about what that is. He goes to Studio 54, but is thrown out due to many things. But he liked that beat and want to go to an other place where he felt welcome. He drops by at 84 king street where the cab driver told him to go.
