My friend is deployed overseas for 6 months and while he's gone I'm taking care of his JRT. Everything is great so far, but this dog is a chronic whiner and it's starting to drive me crazy. Every time I look at the dog it does this high pitched whining. It whines for attention, it whines for food, it whines for its toys. Every time it whines I say a sharp "QUIET" then walk away and ignore it, but then it just sits there and whines some more. The only times it doesn't whine is when it's asleep or when it's out for a walk.

I've tried exercising it more and we're up to 2 hour walks every day and 2 hours of fetch. It only makes the dog sleep more in the afternoon, but doesn't really address the behavior. What more can I do for this dog?

My friend warned me about how much the dog whines, but I never thought it would be this bad.

That's really sweet of you to take care of your friend's dog while he is gone.

Have you tried giving the dog a bone to chew on? That can keep some dogs busy for long periods of time..no time for whining.

Go to your friend's house and find something that has his/her scent on it. Also, if you keep the dog in a kennel find a cheap stuffed animal to occupy its time. You can also try raw-hidese or flavored pigs ears anything that involves chewing is a great distraction.

I wouldn't recommend getting a stuffed animal for a dog because dogs chew alot and if they they chew it open they may eat the stuffing. Very common and may lead to surgical removal of the stuffing. But I recommend a bone or something hard to chew on. No as for correcting the behavior this isn't your dog but you do have him for a while. The owner possibly gave in to this dogs every whine just to shut him up. My friends had a husky and they would put her in a kennel for periods of time and she would whine and the husband would let her out every time she whined so she finally understood when I whine I get what I want. So if you ignore it and do not give her anything until she is completely quiet and give her a treat when she is quiet she should stop eventually. Treats and rewards are a dogs best friend. So when she is whining ignore her do not yell at her or show her any attention what so ever. turn your back and walk away. The minute she is quiet give her a treat. Repeat this ever chance you get and be consistent. It will not take her long to realize when she is quiet she gets a reward whether it is praise a toy food or a treat affection or anything. Saying her name is a reward to a dog. After a little while of her realizing quiet for treat she will then begin to realize that is what you want from her. Dogs are usually very in to pleasing their master or the person who is around. If you are consistent this will work. It sucks he is not your dog though because this is an exercises the owner should know and you should teach him when he gets home. Good luck. It has worked with both my labs.
