Friend's 18, thinking about Boot Camp.?

I'm in southern California, my friend say the big ones are in San Diego- my worry is about the complications trying to get in to one, right now my purpose in attending one is to have a place where I could advance until I can come back to support my family- we're just renting and it's pretty hard (at least I have a place to stay, a "hard place") Anyway I'm just jumbled up, if I would ever get into one (I don't plan on being in the military or navy) does this require for either of my parents be a resident? or are there ways I could just get into one without actually having to sign up for the reserves or etc.. Does he get a citizenship when he's done with his terms serving the army? Do you have to sign up for the navy, marine or military just to go into a boot camp? Do I have to pay for entry to bootcamp? there are tests and stuff to take before starting in one right? but what if you don't have any plans to serve in the military but just bootcamp?

Appreciate it.
If its possible can someone explain the Boot Camp step by step like

asvab test > approval > bootcamp > be sent to reserve etc..

I have no general knowledge of the military atm.
So there are no 13 week trip to bootcamp for any branches not to get my ass owned?

how about army? sounds complicated..
