Friday the 13th Sequels: Any Good?

I count myself as something of a fan of horror films - it's easily my favourite genre. However some films have 'slipped through the cracks' and I have never seen them. Being subscribed to an online DVD rental service I though I'd do something about it.

Having seen the original Friday the 13th many years ago, I thought I'd fill in some of the blanks having seen Freddy vs. Jason and Jason X. I rented Friday the 13th Part 2 last week, and to be honest I didn't think much of it. Compared to the original, I felt it was really lacking something. I know sequels invariably don't surpass their originals, but having seen Halloween 2 many years ago I was encouraged to see the rest of the series, despite it being inferior to the original. Friday the 13th Part 2 hasn't exactly encouraged me to see the rest of the series.

Given there are so many Friday the 13th sequels, are they worth bothering with, or should I just stop now?

They are pretty much the same, only they get a bit worse. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch one, but if they are ever on the TV I will take a look. The one with a young Corey Feldman isn't too bad, but that's just because Corey was in it.

Seeing as you are a horror fan I'd watch the best ones when you have the time.
The only sequels worth watching are part 4,6 & 7.
(I feel part 7's the best of the above)

But don't expect too much, they are basic teen slashers with their main selling point being a cool looking villain.

Like I say you probably won't be too impressed but the series is a major factor in the history of horror movies.

Jason X is by far the worst in the series, so if you actually liked that one you'll probably gain some enjoyment out of the sequels.

Personally i think the entire franchise is poor. The first film was mediocre imo, and the rest are pretty much terrible. Although that said, i do quite like Freddy Vs. Jason, but then i am a fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street films, and i thought the final 20 mins of F Vs J was awesome (the fight scene).

Thanks for your advice. I'll add those ones to my rental list.

As cross-overs go, I thought Freddy vs. Jason was OK. Never going to win any awarRAB, but a lot better than it might have been.

The sequels are good to watch if you can get them uncut.

However Paramount control them and uncut versions are never on dvd or on tv --all the gory highlights are edited out as paramount insist on supplying the US R versions.

Some came out uncut in the 80's on VHS but apart from Part 1 (controlled by Warner in the UK) the rest are cut on dvd

On US dvd Part 1 is also cut as its controlled by Paramount.

The US complete series boxset has many of the gory highlights but only as extras and not within the films themselves

Not a big fan of the Friday 13th films apart from part 1 and 2. Probably never did see the uncut versions though. I don't see the point of cutting a film then leaving it that way as it was not the way it was intended to be shown CUT..
I can understand the 80's nostalgia of banned films back the but surely now they should be released in full uncut glory.

Going against the grain a little, I loved Jason X, but it was a comedy, a parody of Friday the 13th Movies and funnier than any of the Scary Movie franchise.

It may have ended up as a parody, but I'm not sure that was the intention. Similarly, you may have found it had comedic value, but unlike the Scary Movie films, I doubt it was intentional. If it set out to be a horror film, but ended up feeling like a comedy, surely that means it's badly missed the mark?

That said, if you enjoyed it, that's all that matters.

Depending on when you saw them you may have seen them uncut.

Part 2 was uncut on vhs but not on dvd.

Part 1 was uncut on rental vhs in the 80's until the VRA got it banned.

When Warner finally got it certificated and re-released on to vhs there was major press aRAB announcing that "Jason Is back and he's fully certified and uncut".

Of course Jason is not really in part 1 ,but what Warner didn't tell anyone was that they had submitted the US R rated version which was cut to bits and that got through without further cuts.

So until the UK Warner dvd releasea few years back it was almost 20 years since the film was uncut.

The easy way to tell is Kevin Bacons death.

The uncut version shows the spike coming through his chest ,he looks down at it and watches the blood spurting out.

The cut version shows the spike starting to come through and then cuts away

part 1 is a bit slow for todays standard but its good
part 2 is god awful
part 3 is OK in the last 10 mins the chase pays off for the bad acting
part 4 is not great
part 5 is CRAP
part 6 is defo the best with fast paced fun not to serious
part 7 is also a good slasher flick with all the chessy 80s stuff going on
part 8 is well made but very boring in a lot of parts but the slashing CHASING is FUN(IN NEW YORK)

part 9 is CRAP CRAP CRAP watch the 1st 5 mins then turn it off haha the rest is really bull
JASON X- is a fun comedy horror with great chessy action
FREDDY vs JASON is fun horror at its best

this series is not one for watching when wanting to be scared because all youll be scared of is the 80s HAIR AND CLOTHES

A lot of them feel like TV movies and are dire. Jason just wasn't menacing in a lot of them. Even though the Halloween sequels were pretty bad, Michael Myers still managed to freak me out, but Jason, nothing. There's also not much sense of continuity in them, hence why I hated Jason X and Freddy vs Jason

I think the first few were good at the time, But they haven't aged at all well, 7 was a highlight, And X was a comedic dig at 80's horror and the series(Imo).

I agree with that. Out of the three big horror film serial killers - Michael, Jason and Freddy, Michael is the one that comes across as most creepy and menancing. Jason is so-so, and Freddy I find almost funny. Although I think that might be due to the slight underlying comedic element of the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

Anyway, thanks all for your suggestions. It seems Part 7 is coming out as a good one, so I'll definately give that a try.

I found this ages ago, presumably when Jason X came out - it's a cracking round up of all the F13th films, so thanks to whoever it was who originally wrote it...enjoy (WARNING: spoilers galore):

"
In the first film Jason has drowned in the lake due to careless counsellors who were knocking boots instead of paying attention. Some years later two counsellors are killed and the camp is closed. Years after that it's reopened and all the counsellors are killed by Jason's vengeful mother. The final counsellor left, the girl with the dark past, decapitates her at the end. Several months later Jason, who's been alive the whole time living in the wooRAB Deliverance style and witnessed his mother's death in the first film, hunts down and kills the counsellor who did her in. And then has some fresh tea. With a bag on his head he then returns to the camp, which of course is being opened yet again, and everyone is killed yet again except of course for the girl with the dark past, who seemingly kills him. But Jason escapes and goes down the road to where a party is being held and wouldn't you know it... kills everyone there too... This is part 3 or 3-D I should say. He obtains his hockey mask from a prankster who gets his jollies by faking his own death to spook people. So of course no one helps him when he really is dying of a severed jugular. Karma's a bitch. Well Jason gets the ol' axe in the head by, you guessed it, a girl with a dark past. This is where the famous slit on the top right of the mask spawned from. He's taken to the morgue and of course isn't dead and escapes and goes back to the lake where of course another party is being held... Guess what... He kills everyone except? NOPE - Corey Feldman proceeRAB to carve poor Jason's head like a thanksgiving turkey. This is the run down of 1 through 4... 2-4 take place over the same weekend for goodness sakes... Jason was busy. I use this as a break because 4 is called "The Final Chapter" but marketability is more powerful than silly promises. So continue I must
