Freelance writing....can I make a living doing it?

I got into freelance writing 2 1/2 months ago. I have had two short story publications and I just completed a fantasy novel, so I am a hard working writer. When I first began freelancing I started writing for Demand Studios, but once I started making a lot of money with them, they started taking longer to approve my work. So I went on a bid site (Bizreef), bidded on some jobs, and have since landed two recurring clients. The problem with Bizreef is you have wait a very long time before your check comes in the mail. I've tried another bid site (ifreelance) and the amount of writers bidding on there is tremendous, plus there's always someone willing to write for much less than I'm offering. Being new to freelance writing, I am careful not to overcharge customers, but I refuse to write for $1 per article. Granted, I have seen progress in the couple of months I've been doing this, but it's just not enough to pay the bills, and I wonder if it will get better, or what I can do to make it better. I even tried submitting to a few newspapers. I've gotten some rejections and one of them said they liked the piece I submitted but a decision has not been made. That was over a month ago. I'd like to hear from other freelancers on this issue. Has it been this hard for you?
