Free WAP

Has anyone got free wap on a factory Cricket or flashed Cricket phone? And if so, has anyone done that with EVDO? I've tried a lot of different proxies, but there are so many settings to mess with, it's been a wild goose chase so far. I'm sure it can be done, and I'm sure everyone would love to know how to get this going, so lets figure it out. Come on Cricket Mafia!

With any of those free WAP methoRAB it is free in the sense that you don't pay extra for it, you only use your airtime minutes. That is how it works on Verizon. The phone still uses a Verizon server to access the proxy you configure the phone to use. That server is transparent and only logs airtime use against your ESN. As is known cricKet does not charge for airtime by the minute so access to the internet is done differently. Your ESN neeRAB to be authorized by having the web service on your account, then the server allowes access beyond the portal homepage. Ever notice that the websession for MMS uses a private IP address that is not routable on the internet and the wap.mycricket.com address for the proxy has no IP address in the internet DNS. Verizon servers all use public internet IP addresses.

All I know is cricket has unlimited minutes, so it would be great if any free proxies actually worked, I've tried a few on different phones and never receive data. Even with internet on my account. (If one was to work I would take internet off and see if it still worked)

Also, even if you don't have internet on your account, you can still get to the Cricket homepage on some phones, just not access anything useful, meaning the internet connection is still there.

Don't mean to hijack this thread--this is somewhat related--but I was always wondering if it were possible to get POP or IMAP access to your Cricket MMS account, but based on your post I highly doubt that this would be possible.

I have tried this many times, with my own proxy, google's proxy, and htr's proxy... all no go.. I asked on htr and they said it can't be done (confirming what Phx_Cricket has said)

P.S. >.> wth is the cricKet mafia

why would you want free wap when its only 5 a month for unlimited? bypassing the proxy is going to be a pain, but its still better than the 49.99+ you pay on other carriers.

The only possible advantage to this would be in order to have WAP available on dual NAM's with Cricket and another provider. However, I think the problem there is connecting via Simple IP only (Cricket) versus Mobile IP Preferred (i.e., Verizon).

Motorola phones can be set to SIP, MIP, or both, which tries MIP first then fall back to SIP if MIP failed. Thats how I have most of my Motos set. Works fine. Would think there is a similar setting on other manufacturers phones. They almost all use Qualcomm chipsets.

I would not bother even trying the free WAP, when it's included unlimited in your plan. Plus, it just plain won't work with cricKet PERIOD

With other Carriers, like Verizon, you choose to use your own proxy, or you can choose to not use any proxy at all, which is how the pocket pc phones are configured.

With Cricket, we have no choice, and we *must* use their proxy, in order to see the outside world.

---------------------------------------------------

It is very similar to Home vs. Work. At Home, you have direct Internet access, but you can choose alternate routes, such as hotmail.com, or an anonymous proxy server. These things take longer to use, but maybe the extra level protection or mobility is worth the effort.

At Work, you probably cannot directly connect to the Internet, instead your only door to the outside is through the single proxy server they force you to use. If you choose not to use your company's proxy server, you are choosing to not take part in the Internet. It is the only option, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Well, maybe instead you could try configuring your computer to use Humpa's proxy server, or the free wap gateway you have running on your computer RABL connection. Even though those might format web sites like a cell phone, at least then you could get online without having to go through your company's proxy server...(for the purpose of viewing pornography without getting fired, why else!)

Hopefully, the previous paragraph sounRAB silly, because it's obviously impossible. The corporate network wouldbn't be secure if a well-placed proxy could be easily defeated, and replaced with some unknown, random Internet proxy. Besides, if you could link up to your proxy at home, why bother even having a proxy, cause you obviously then having working Internet, and a proxy will only limit you. On a phone, I guess, you need a wap gateway, but not on a pocket pc...

This is why on the PocketPC phones, you can't use "My ISP" for your internet connection. You have to use "My Work Connection", because it's the only one that'll let you add a proxy.

Let's all face reality, I think this proves we really are working for Cricket, and paying them too! Doesn't everybody feel so much more secure now?

I need a day off...
