Free market and health care?

When was the last time you saw a price list at your doctors office?
When was the last time a physician actually knew how much he was going to make before he did a procedure on someone?

Why do people argue that the "free market has failed" in health care, when it hasn't been a free market for a very, very long time.

Can you imagine if McDonalds followed a similar pricing structure:

"I'd like to order a BigMac"

"Just a moment.....Mam, it appears that you can only purchase cheese burgers and onion rings from us. If you want a BigMac you'll have to go over to the next city".

"Ok, I'll ring you up. What race are you? How many children? Do you have food insurance? Who's your food insurance provider? Do you have your food insurance card with you" "Sit down and fill out these forms. After you're done, we'll get you your cheese burger. It should only take 30 minutes or so".

Depending on the answers that were given, she could walk out of there with no cheese burger, a free cheese burger, or a cheese burger that ranged in price from ten cents to $20.

......Do we really need MORE oversight, regulation, government intervention, and red tape? ......or do we need a thousand times less???

Well, if you have ever contacted your insurance provider you can get a price list of how much you or your company (depending on how they do it) pays for certain tests, procedures, etc. When my wife and I were going to be having a baby we contacted our insurance company and they faxed us a pricing list that broke everything down to how much we were going to pay for visits, tests, the birth, etc.

Just because it isn't on a big lit menu panel doesn't mean that the price list isn't there. You just have to ask for it.

And don't get me wrong. I don't disagree with you that we don't need the government to get involved.
