Free fall describes any motion of a body where gravity is the only or dominant force acting upon it, so technically when your falling nearly vertically on a swing from the top of your path your experiencing free fall, but when your moving upwards and horizontally you are not in free fall. I wouldn't use a swing as a good example of free fall because at many points in your swinging motion gravity is not the dominant and definitely not the only force acting on you, there is also the tension in the string and the centripetal force is creates.
