Free CGI software for videos?

I want to make videos that you can make like cgi type stuff. Like special effects. When you see videos on youtube of ships and things like that. Computer anumation. Any free software I can download to do stuff like that?
 
Blender 3D is a free 3D modelling and animation tool that I believe can do what you are after.
