I know that he was gay... What I am wondering is if at the time that Queen was huge was he openly gay.. or was it not public untill after he died... Also were his bandmembers aware of his homosexuality while they were together?
Dont' get me wrong... I'm not asking this in a condescending or homophobic way... I love Freddie and Queen and their music was and will always be great

it was public the minute you saw him...he didnt get those teeth suckin on door knobs...

"While some critics have suggested that Mercury hid his sexual orientation from the public,[5][20][54] other sources refer to the singer as having been "openly gay".[6][55] In fact, Mercury referred to himself as "gay" in a 1974 interview with NME magazine.[56] On the other hand, he would often distance himself from partner Jim Hutton during public events in the 1980s.[44] A writer for a gay online newspaper felt that audiences may have been overly naïve about the matter: "While in many respects he was overtly queer his whole career ('I am as gay as a daffodil, my dear' being one of his most famous quotes), his sexual orientation seemed to pass over the heads of scrutinising audiences and pundits (both gay and straight) for decades."[57] John Marshall of Gay Times expressed the following opinion in 1992: "He [Mercury] was a 'scene-queen', not afraid to publicly express his gayness but unwilling to analyse or justify his lifestyle....It was as if Freddie Mercury was saying to the world, 'I am what I am. So what?' And that in itself was a statement.""

people saw him go to bathhouses and said his look was "in" for homosexuals. most people suspected it but were not completely sure until his death. he always gave those little hints though. and yes the members knew about the year before he got aids.

R.I.P

Everyone knew he was gay and yes the other members of Queen knew during the time they were together. We don't worry about things like that much here in the UK.

Freddie was bisexual. He had a relationship with Mary Austin for 6 years and they lived together. She has inherited most of his fortune after his death.
The rest of the band did not realize he was bisexual ,until after 1980.
He was still sleeping with women after 1980 and had an affair with a German actress, Barbara Valentin.
Freddie was never open about his personal life and it's really a shame that most of the people talk more about this, than his work!
