Franchises that should never have been..

This is a bit OT but I wonder which came first, not the chicken or the egg but Rush Hour or the TV show Martial Law? 'cause thats pretty much the same setup, cool LA cop and his cop partner who's from Asia working together... Sammo rocked! :D

and to answer the question I'd go with the Scream trilogy and the American Pie trilogy/series...

The Rocky series went on for 2 films too long. Ditto Rambo and First Blood. First Blood was a decent movie but Rambo II and III were just dire and cheesy.

Poltergeist
The Exorcist (though I liked the third one which should have been the first, and only, sequel)
Splash!
Ghostbusters
Scream
Predator (Predator 2 was middling and Alien vs Predator - noooo!)
Rambo
Rocky
Pirahna
Jaws
Escape from New York
The Matrix (thought the first one was over-rated anyway)
The Amityville Horror
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Highlander
Robocop

They were of their time and persoanlly I think they were great. Yes they went on about 3 or 4 films too long but the "classics" (Cleo, Cowboy, Khyber, Camping, Jungle top name just five) are a joy to watch. How anyone can sit through the dinner scene in Khyber without laughing is beyond me :)

I think I'd turn this thread round - which film series was worth making. I'd nominate Bond and Carry on. T2 was good but should have stopped there. :)

The Matrix was an OTT regurgitation of the Wachowski's geeky interests (mostly anime and western sci fi with an added dollop of highbrow philisophy) rather than anything particularly ground-breaking (Bullet time is/was a technological breakthrough but does not a movie make)
The sequels merely showed how self-indulgent the whole enterprise was.
Bound is still their best movie!
