Frame Sliders

I've search for a while now and I am thoroughly confused about frame sliders and ducatis. I guess maybe if we can consolidate to firsthand experience with them in this thread to help others know your stories without searching through a ton of threads like I did.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with their ducati superbike and sliders?

I just bought my first ducati so I don't have experice with ducs and frame sliders, but I do with others so I will start.

First experience:

2006 Ninja 650R with R&G frame sliders, no-cut variation with aluminum bracket. First bike and did a noob thing. touch my front brake and caught a little patch of wet sand in a parking lot. Practically at a stop. Would have saved it except I tore my hamstring. Dropped on right side and only damage was a broken foot peg. No frame, engine, or plastic damage at all.

Second:

2006 GSXR-600 with Shogun sliders, cut variation. Pulled the bike out of the garage and started it up while on the sidestand. Turned around to walk over to put on the rest of my gear and hear it it the ground. Sidestand wasn't locked out all the way, plus small depression in pavement, plus cold transmission means the bike rolled forward about 6 inches and collapsed onto left side. Sliders took it all, except momentum rolled up over the slider where the top of the bike touched the ground. Broke tip of clutch lever, minor scratches in fairing (smalled than dime) and tail. No frame damage, at all.

Anyone else? I'm leaning towards throught he plastic sliders for my 848.

I just bought the Sato no cut frame sliders for my 1098. The install was a piece of cake (took about < 20 min) Haven't tested them yet... and what kinda sucks about the sliders is that i don't see how it would save my fairings at all in a lowside. But my reasoning behind purchasing the Sato no cut sliders was that something is better than nothing. =P

I still have not purchase sliders for my bike... really have been meaning to. So you are looking at the sliders that are through the body... aka "cut" kind? I've hear all types of debates. I myself don't care for the look of through the body sliders so I'd probably purchase under the body sliders so to actually just protect the frame and engine. If I was to go with through the body sliders I would rather not cut stock body pieces, maybe if I had some sharkskinz I would cut. If you do much research on the 848/1098 crashes you'll see they get totalled very easily due to bend frame tabs for the foot pegs, in the simplest crashes. Only a straight tip over is from stop or slow speed or a fall and slide so long as the bike doesn't spin around during the slide due to the way that the stock pegs fold. Also if you go with aftermarket none folding pegs you might be increasing you chances of bending frame tabs.

Just weighing options right now. Looking for actual reports of slider "use" or stories. Not really wanting to get into a debate about what is better or worse for a bike, thats for another thread.

Just looking for unbiased, objective stories of slider use, like my examples. This way people will have a good basis of knowledge to do what "they" choose to "their" bike.

thanks.

BTW: doesn't have to be just sliders on a ducati, any bike will work.

so let me get it straight millerl, are you saying frame sliders increase the potential of the "trellis" frame bending, over no-sliders? if that is the case i would like to know for sure.

no sorry not saying that... not sure they i guess that could. I was talking about the foot pegs... they are connected to a couple for tabs off the frame that reportedly bend very easy in crashes especially with aftermarket non-bendable/foldable foot pegs, but not necessary the case have seen the tabs get bent also with that stock foot pegs which are bendable/foldable. As with frame sliders I have heard some people like under body better not only looks but functionally as well... I think it was expanded that underbody sliders offer frame protection from fall then body takes sliding abuse first before possibly being warn down to the slider... were as through the body sliders are possibly more "grippy" that body panels and many cause sliding bike to girp and turn or flip more violently and a bike sliding on body panels which don't offer much grip. Don't know exactly how this equates to real life... but kinda seems to make some sense.

I've got sliders under the fairings. I've gone down a few times, low slide in turns, most recently on the 1098. The damage to my bikes were to the fairings, levers, mirrors, and clip-ons. No damage to the frame (I had the shops check the frames, forks, swing arms, etc). I've gotten into the habit of precutting levers and rearsets so they "fail" in a crash. I've seen 2 buddy's bike with through body sliders low slide and flip all over the place, each time totaling the bikes.

Nothing can save the bike if it goes down with enough energy. Now I ride with training wheels and a big red helmet.

there are other threads on frame sliders where the topic was throughly discussed. i have sato racing ones on the 848. but i remember there was a brand that was specificly not recommended because it wasn't through the engine mount, but was attached to the frame.
