Formula of a Hydrate ChemLab Experiment Question?

Starting tomorrow and spanning through next week, I'm supposed to take part in a lab titled: "Formula of a Hydrate a Guided Discovery" in my Chemistry Lab. in Total between 2 days this lab is supposed to take about 6 hours to complete.

under Structure of the Lab, the assignment lists seven steps including a few that I just don't understand.
1. Develop and write a procedure to determine the chemical identity of the ions in the hydrate. (30 min)
4. Develop and write a second procedure which will determine how many water molecules are present for each formula unit of salt in the hydrate.

I don't mind if nobody wants to answer these questions for me, But if somebody could at least partially explain how to come up with this stuff, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have the world's worst chemistry teacher, and a lab teacher with a poor grasp of the English language who believes we should know how to do things that neither one bothers to explain. So, any assistance on this subject would be most appreciated.
