They are both the first of their series. Different series. I read them like.. 4 or 5 years ago and figured the series would've been updated by now. But I forgot their names!
Book 1
At the start of this book, a prologue or something, a wizard arrives at the house of a newborn baby. Everyone gets a 'gift' when they are born in this world. The mother thinks the gift is useless, so the wizard gets angry and changes it. The girl must give anything when someone asks her. At this time, we also see another Gifter/wizard visiting a baby boy.(jumps forward in time).
These two kids enroll in magic school (I think) and one of the 'gifters' at the start becomes their friend and kinda watches over them. Anyways, some evil guy ( a teacher?) wants the boy's powers. I think the boy was good at magic or smart. mostly likely its magic. Eventually he tricks the two into going somewhere alone with him, and asks the girl to give him (evil dude) the boy's gift/power.
EDIT: I never read the 2nd book, but I saw the cover. Apparently the evil guy-or a new evil guy- comes back with a pair of evil twins.
Book 2
This boy wants to train to be a warrior...but he's not very good at it. Something or other happens and his magical ability is recognised and he gets sent to another school to learn magic. His signature move is a sword swing. In the middle of the swing he's meant to step forward and stab the enemy. That's the most noticeable thing I remember. So, there is this evil high/accomplished wizard who is the bad guy. He is somehow corrupted...and he is eventually killed by the protagonist using his signature move. When he dies, the evil guy says something like 'I've never seen a wizard do this before...'
It;s not the Xanth series.
