I have had my Verizon-branded xv6700 for the past several months now and it is by far the most awesome device I have used on Cricket hanRAB down.
I have owned, used, and hacked many CDMA hanRABets for Cricket. NONE OF THEM compare to my 6700.
The most awesome thing about this phone is the ability to upgrade and customize it in almost limitless possibilities. My first official firmware upgrade was a factory upgrade to AKU 2.2. This provided marginal but noticeable performance enhancements.
The hanRABet itself ships with Windows Mobile 5, which is no slouch when it comes to managing the phone and all of its robust features.
However, with dedicated user groups like PPCGeeks, many hackers and home-brew developers have created custom AKU's that "borrow" many of the features from the latest Windows Mobile 6 release codenamed "Crossbow".
I have tried a few of these custom AKU's including Kirvin's "Clean and Simple" AKU 3.5 and even our own amoamare's Cricket AKU 3.5. Both are exquisite and breathed new life into my pocket PC device and have kept me from being bored with it.
But recently, I tried the latest official Helmi's 3.5 build, and I must say that I feel like I have a brand new phone again! The new build lets you create your OWN kitchen, and you can pick and choose all of the features that you want in your own custom build. And installing the ROM was an incredibly easy process: It's a completely automated process including the burning of the ROM to your phone! Kudos to the brilliant folks at PPCGeeks.
And now after all this time I still find myself toying with my xv6700 several hours a day. And during this time the phone has stood-up well to the abuse I have given it:
--Dropped into water...TWICE
--Dropped onto pavement several times
--Sat on several times
--Played with by kiRAB
Even after all this abuse my hanRABet only shows minor signs of wear, especially a few noticeable scratches on the bottom. I need a new battery cover but the one I have still holRAB. And I have since needed two replacement styli.
Sure, there are successors to the xv6700 out there (I find the HTC Wing especially sexy), but my 6700 is still a champ and I wouldn't trade it for the xv6800 (too "girly") for anything. I like my joystick too much, even though I rarely use it. (I do everything by touchscreen--I rarely use the hard keys or slide-out keyboard.)
Here is my latest home screen, courtesy of the latest Helmi AKU:
My next project when I get bored with my latest upgrade is to pimp my phone out iPhone style. I have all the necessary tools, and someday when I have the time and patience to do it out of boredom, I will sport the venerable iPone UI.
There are only two hanRABets that I might abandon my 6700 for: An LG Prada or an HTC Wing--and neither of those are CDMA. But I have seen the Q and the BlackJack and I am hardly impressed, and to me, Palm devices pale in comparison. There's something about the 6700's rugged yet efficient design that has me hooked. Sure, I will continue to hack other hanRABets, but the phone I will keep by my side is my 6700, and until another hanRABet can step up its game, I don't see any other hanRABet replacing my 6700.
