Foreign Language Movies Done Justice By Hollywood

Have there been any foreign language movies that, when given the Hollywood treatment, do the original justice?

Two disasters that spring to mind are the remakes of Rec and Les Visiteurs. The remakes, Quarantine and Just Visiting, were terrible.

The remake of Ringu, The Ring, faired a lot better. Still didn't match the original though.

I dread to think what Hollywood would do with Battle Royale.

Are there any jobs well done?
And what are the worst examples?

The only one I would consider at least on a par with, if not better, is The Departed / Infernal Affairs.

The trouble is, most foreign language films considered for remake are always the really good ones that get exposure and award nominations, so room for improvement is highly unlikely, as well as the small fact that there is absolutely no real reason to remake them in the first place, other than to dumb it down for those who can't handle subtitles...:D

Let the Right One In is a prime example - less than 2 years old, an excellent film, yet the US remake has already been done. I ask - why? But the current lack of originality in Hollywood is a completely different thread in its own right...

It's an oldie but I reckon Magnificent 7 was about even with The 7 Samurai.
Hollywood is pretty lazy and it's a shame they have to dumb movies down for their audiences. I can't believe they've gone and remade Let the Right one in, especially as from what i've heard it's pretty much scene for scene copy

Many years ago "Pepe le Moko" the famous french film was remade in Hollywood & retitled "Algiers" with Charles Boyer & Hedy Lamar. I believe it did well at the box office.
Another Jean Gabin film redone Hollywood style was "Le Bete Humaine". Fritz Lang remade it as "Human Desire" with Glenn Ford & Gloria Grahame In the leaRAB.

Japanese horror relies more on suspense and psychological effects whereas Hollywood is about in your face scaring to make you jump.

I like foreign films a lot but I think that's mainly because there's a bit of difference in the way they work and I have became bored of "the norm".

I can't think of an example because I don't think I've seen any remakes. Well, I probably will have but I didn't know they were originally non-Hollywood.
