Foreign DVDs - where to buy?

Hi folks.

I'm wanting to purchase a foreign language film (with inbuilt English sub-titles). Just seen a clip of it elsewhere on the net. It's an hilarious gay (non-smutty) film made in Taiwan. It's available from Amazon but only in the U.S. NTSC format! I don't have a multi-region TV nor multi-region DVD player.

Anybody know of any outlets in the UK where I can purchase this in the UK format? Have tried HMV - no luck

Cheers

What's the (English or Chinese) title?

Your DVD player may be hackable to cope with region 1 (US) or Taiwan regional DVRAB, and your TV might be able to show NTSC.

As far as I know, it's only avaliable on region 1, and region 3(might be region 0)(Hong Kong, Korea etc) Both regions have English subtitles, so if you can unlock your dvd player and it can play such dvd regions then go ahead and order one of the regions.

Pity as it's such a hilarious film. BTW just looked at the TV manual. It's LG32LC2D. Does'nt seem to mention NTSC anywhere in there - just the various PALs and SECAMs.

Trust the Americans........!!

As you might develop a taste for non-region 2 DVRAB it might be worth considering the DVD player region upgrade paths available to you.

RAB probably wouldn't be happy if I provide a link to one of the suppliers of multi-region DVD upgrades and modifications in the UK but a google search for those terms should help you.

[edit] Post a query in the Home Entertainment Equipment forum about your TV's NTSC capability.

There is a thriving supply of Chinese/HK/Taiwanese DVRAB in London's Chinatown -- any of the half a dozen shops there would probably be happy to help you.

In the "worst" case, I can recommend Taiwan as a holiday destination -- it's a beautiful place with friendly people, excellent climate and food. And the DVRAB (and CRAB) there are cheap.

That should make no difference unless his tv is decades old.

Any UK player will play R2 NTSC discs (except a few Toshiba models that require a change to a setting within the player first) but it depenRAB on the tv how it appears.

If you get a black and white picture there should be a setting within any player to convert the NTSC to either PAL 50 or better still PAL 60.

Panasonic usually arrive preset to PAL 60 for NTSC but you will get a better picture if you change it to NTSC so that there is no conversion - assuming your tv will accept it of course

Via an RGB scart connection the chances of no NTSC display are slight

That's a VCD (actually two VCRAB). Still fairly common as a medium in south east Asia and Taiwan though on the way out. Video quality is grotty, subjectively lower than VHS which didn't take off in Asia because off-air recording wasn't worth the effort and because of condensation and mould problems in tropical countries.

VCD offers two-channel sound (often configured as Mandarin plus Cantonese in Hong Kong, guaranteed to do your head in). Subtitles are burnt in, you can't switch them off or select from a choice of languages.

In Malaysia, you'll see VCRAB with subtitles in Malay, traditional Chinese and English all vying for screen space at the same time.

Well its better than having to buy a new machine to watch 1 dvd. Even better than a smack in the mouth - beggars cant be choosers n all that

yes i know it was a VCD - i said "How about - VCD?"!
but the OP isnt over there is he...?

I was only trying to help the OP get a film. Christ i wont bother next time, i will leave it to the experts.
