I appreciate any help I can get. I'd like to know what I can do first, other than take it to a mechanic, and also, if I take it to a place, not get scammed.
Used to rev high, but tried stp engine treatment, and the problem alleviated. Now it only gets stuck when I stop, but revs down after a couple of seconds. Occasionally, sometimes not.
Also, it HEsitates after starting from a stop. Sometimes almost stalls. Have to baby it out of low revs. (automtc). Stp also helped somewhat. I got stuck changing the tranny at a big retailer. It has an overdrive gear, and on the freeway, between 4th and 5th gear, and especially on a low grade, it goes back and forth like it doesn't have enough power to stay in the upper gear.
Have changed the plugs and wires, air filter, and even that little side filter, and also had the part under the distributor cap changed by a mechanic( His recommendation $350). But nothing changed; remains the same. I imagine he looked at the rotor cap, but I'm going to double check him on that.
I have the feeling that it could be a tuneup issue, that the mixture is too lean, that it's not getting the proper air flow, that the idle (top dead center or off 6 degree stuff) is set wrong. I guess I should take it to a certified mechanic (asc) with a smog specialty, also.
Thanks for your help.
