Ford Focus Troubles - please help!?

Hi, I have a 2002 Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia Automatic (petrol) hatchback with only 29k miles with full Ford service history. I am experiencing intermittent hesitation issues during accelaration and sometimes have had the engine warning light flash on and off (but not stay on). I took the car to a local garage and they performed a diagnostic test which showed no faults. The car ran fine for a few days and then the accelaration problem came back - i again went back to the garage who carried out another diagnostic test (for free) with the same result (no fault). The garage confirmed that if i took the car to Ford, they would perform the same test as he has the same equipment - is this true? or will Ford have advanced diagnostic equipment?

Also has anybody got any ideas as to what the proble maybe? On cold mornings the engine feels as though it is going to cut out when i put the car in drive. All comments appreciated - Thanks
