Ford Focus speed counter problem?

I have a Ford Focus LX 1800 registered 2001. After driving about 5 miles the speed counter needle suddenly drops to zero, If I continue driving the needle will revert to its normal working function. If I slow down to stop, during the time the needle is at zero, the engine will stall. The rev counter is not affected.
 
the speedometer and idle control may be related to speed sensor and if faulty will cause problems by confusing your cars computer controls. Need to have checked with a scanner and replaced if necessary.
