I got a ford fiesta 1.4 style (55plate) in jan from arnold clark (yes i know, but it was good deal). I started having problems putting it into gear when i turned it on cold: crunches if trying to put into reverse, just damn hard to put into first. Once its put into gear that first time its much better (although gets smoother when warmer)

Took it back while still under warranty and they said they could find nothing wrong with it (surprise surprise). I have now taken to starting the car in gear, but i shouldnt have to! I bought this car to replace my old one that needed too much done to it, so i am really loathe to start shelling out on this one already.

So... any had a similar problem or got some suggestions? Its fine to put into gear when warm, and clutch doesnt appear to be slipping. Hoping for some relatively simple or cheap fix, that doesnt involve getting a new clucth!

THIS IS DUE TO THE GEARBOX OIL BEING COLD AND THICK ,IT GIVES A SENSATION LIKE CLUTCH DRAG.However,a lot of drivers are now taught to drive by holding it in gear at lights and junctions, especially drivers with bad judgement, bad traffic sense and slow reaction times.A good driver will knock it out of gear, handbrake on and watch the traffic or lights ahead and be back in gear in time to draw away. You pay for you clutch, gearbox and thrust bearings,if you hold i8n gear and slip the clutch a lot it works out very expensive, although modern friction materials are of better lasting quallity.I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO START THE ENGINE,LET IT TICK OVER FOR A MINUTE,THEN PUMP THE CLUTCH PEDAL UP AND DOWN A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THEN EASE IT INTO GEAR.The first thing you do when getting a used car is to change the engine oil and filter, that is if the garage cannot be trusted or you buy privately.
