Ford Fiesta cuts out when I come to a stand still?

Hi Folks,

My Ford Fiesta 1.3 P reg is cutting out when it comes to a stand still. The clutch, gearbox and engine work perfectly but when I come to a stand still it cuts out. It always starts off the ignition and will tick over, even from cold, when it's started and sat in a stationary position.

Could it be a fuel thing or a vacume valve or something?

Any suggestions would be great.

Cheers,

Maccers
It's an injection by the way and did have an air idle control valve fitted but made no difference. Bit of a weird one. Car is only worth a couple of hundred so could end up with bigger garage bill than it's worth. thanks folks!

You haven't said if the car is fuel injected or if there's a carburettor? If there's a carb, then it could be that the slow idle inlet jet is blocked. Also, some carb's have a small metal filter in them which very occasionally needs a clean from the rubbish that ends up in the fuel system. But either of these would be a pretty easy garage fix. Alternatively, it could be that that the engine when warm (and un-choked) is simply idling too slow. Again, an easy fix.

Idle control valve? It should only need cleaning. Getting to it is another matter.

It could be the Mass Air Flow because I had the same problem and it wass the Mass Air Flow(MAF)

Idle air control valve sticking or worn out. 75% certain that is what it is.

IT IS A P REG WITH A CAT SO CANNOT BE CARBUETTOR MUST BE INJECTION

Sounds like an air/fuel mixture problem when idling. When you start it from cold the automatic choke will kick in but once the engine has warmed up the mixture is insufficient causing it to cut out. Possibly a carburettor problem, take it to a garage!

I've driven cars that have done that. They would die at red lights if I didn't put them in park and continually give a little gas. (They had automatic transmissions.) It's hard to say what causes it because it could be a few different things. One thing you could do is to to add carbeurator or fuel injector cleaner to your gas tank every few fill ups. That may help it may not. You could also try changing the air filter.
